IESL College of Engineering Academic Year 2018- Part Time Programme Graduate Diploma Level CESO001 - Structural Steel Design Date: 09, February 2019 Duration: Three (03) Hours From: 9:00~ 12:00 noon instructions before starting to answer the question paper mn paper has 04 questions. Answer only Three (03) questions including the question 1. Marks assigned to questions within a question are given. Write the relevant numbers of the questions to which you provide answers in the cage on the cover page of the answer book. Start answering each question from a fresh page of the answer book and write the relevant question number at the top of the page. Use sketches to explain your answers wherever relevant. Neat and clear handwriting and steps involved in calculations are extremely important. Delete any material, which does not require the attention of the examiner, by drawing a line over such material, Marks will be deducted if the above instructions are not adhered to. nthe following structural elements according to BS 5950-1:2000. Question 1 Figure 1 shows a steel roof truss of an industrial building. Dimensions of the truss are as follows; Span of the truss — 16m. Rise of the truss - 32m Roof angle 21.8 deg ‘Truss spacing ~4.0m Rafter length 8.62 m Purlin spacing —2mele Loading on the truss as follows; Dead loads: measured in the slope length of the truss, 0.12 kN/m? for roof sheeting and insulations, 0.1 kN/m? for purlins, and 0.11 kN/m? for self-weight of the truss. Live loads: 0.75 kN/m? measured on the plan. Wind loads: not considered. a, Evaluate unfactored dead and imposed loads on each node to analyse as a pin jointed truss. [6 marks] Determine the axial load on the member 1-8. Calculate the design moment of this member if the bending moment is given by N.12/6 where N is the normal component of the purlin load and L is the panel length. [8 marks] c. Check whether the member 1-8 is adequate if it is designed with two nos 80x60x7 unequal angles with long lengths back to back spaced at 8 mm apart for allow for gusset plates with spacing washers at quarter points. The angle sections used are in S275 steel. Section properties are given in Table 1. You may follow the steps given below. i, Classify the cross section ii, Find the slendemess ratio iii, Calculate the buckling moment Mp. where, Ms = 0.8 py Zxx iv.
