Do we uphold and follow norms because they’re “good”? Or are things “good”
because they are “normal?”

We may say lying is normal. But does this equate to goodness? Does the
acceptance of this expectation towards humanity makes it a good act just because the
majority normalize this?

Norms according to Horne (2017) are a fundamental concept in the social sciences
that includes internalized values. We conform to norms for us to be able to avoid acts far
from what is considered good. This provides order in the society creating a guide or
directing people’s behavior. Given this we are able to make sense and understand each
other’s action and evaluating them whether it may be considered good or bad. Norms are
rather followed because they are coined appropriate actions.

The frequency of practice nor the number of people considering things as normal
does not make it acceptable. Not all things that are being normalized are paralleled to our
values that defines goodness over not.
