Introduction:
Welcome 1st graders! Today we have an interesting activity that is really going to get
your body moving. First, let me ask you a few questions! If you know the answer please raise
your hand, do not just call out the answer. Who knows what it means to modify? What might be
an example? (if no one knows the answer: it means to make partial changes, ex: building a home)
Who knows what it means to adapt? What might be an example? (if no one knows the answer:
become adjusted to, ex: wearing different clothes for different seasons) Who knows what it
means to interact? What might be an example? (if no one knows the answer: react and
connections, ex: swimming in a lake) Now that we have a good understanding on these terms we
are ready to move along with the activity! This activity will be a game sort of like charades, I am
going to call out actions that represent modifying, adapting and interacting with the environment
and your job it to act them out!

Behavioral Objectives:
● The students will be able to move their bodies according to the descriptions.
● The students will be able to engage in acting out modifying, adapting and interacting with
the environment.
● The students will be able to make connections to the description and imagine how to act
it out.
Class Management:
● Before the students arrive, place 24 poly spots evenly spaced out around the gym
● Have the students sit up front to listen to the directions
● Reminder with safety: personal space, no running, hands to yourself
● After introducing the activity and going over the directions and safety have each of the
students find their own poly spot.
Directions:
● Begin with calling out ways to modify an environment
○ Build a house
○ Plant a garden
○ Mowing the lawn
○ Farming
○ Installing a streetlight
● Next, call out ways to adapt to an environment
○ Putting on warm clothes for winter
○ Using an umbrella
○ Shoveling snow
○ Driving a car
○ Putting on sunscreen
● Lastly, call out ways to interact with an environment
○ Swimming in a lake
○ Going on a walk
○ Fishing
○ Going for a bike ride
○ Climbing a tree

Closure Activity:
* Have the students come back to the front of the classroom and sit in a listening circle*
You guys did a great job today listening to directions and acting out different ways to
modify, adapt and interact with an environment. Remember, modifying is making changes,
adapting is adjusting and interacting is making connections. Lets review a little bit!
● What is applying sunscreen? (adapting)
● Building a house? (modifying)
● Swimming in a lake? (Interacting)
● Challenging one! Where would watching tv go? (none of the above)
