Lesson Overview
Grade Level 5th
Estimated Time Needed 45 minutes
Students will learn about cause/effect text structure. Students will watch a
video with cause/effect elements for engagement. The teacher will then
explain to students what a cause/effect structure is and its purpose. The

teacher will model with a text on how to identify the purpose of the text
structure. The students will independently identify the purpose of the text
structure for the jellyfish article.

Plans for Leading a Discussion Following Guided Practice and Independent Practice
Launch Frame

We looked at the alligator story and together we made little jots about what
happened and why it happened. We also looked at the author’s purpose for
choosing a cause-and-effect text structure. What is something new you learned
today about text structures and cause and effect?
Eliciting, Orienting Questions to ask During the Discussion
What eliciting, probing, and orienting questions will you ask during the
discussion?

Why would an author talk about the causes and effects of something?

to teach us?
Following Guided Practice
Why would the author of the alligator article choose to write the article with cause
and effect?

Conclusion Frame
Did you guys see how I read my article, I made jots about what happened, and
why it happened. I also wrote down why I think the author decided to use a
cause-and-effect text structure to organize the information. For our next activity,
you guys are going to read the Jellyfish article in our information study pack.
Follow the strategies I used. Make jots about what happened and why it
happened. On a separate piece of paper write down the author’s purpose for
using that text structure.

Practice easier for the reader to understand the information and to explain why something
happened. What text structure was used in the Jellyfish article?
Eliciting Orienting Questions to ask During the Discussion
What are some examples of cause and effect you found in the article?
Why would the author of the jellyfish article choose to write the article in a cause-
and-effect structure?
Conclusion Frame
For reading we learned that authors use cause and effect text structure to
explain why something happened to the readers. Tomorrow we will discuss
some more text structures. As for now, put away your books and your packets

Learners
The majority of the Gifted and Talented students were able to recognize the
elements in the passage. They knew that it was cause and effect but were
Gifted and Talented unable to clearly identify it. With the GT students, I will ask conferring questions
and help them use strategies to be able to put into words why they know it’s the
text structure.

Assessment
The next day during their genius lab time, the students will take the post-assessment. The students will receive the
same worksheet they completed for the pre-assessment. The assessment will have a passage with a cause-and-
effect structure. The students will be asked to identify the text structure and to write down the purpose of the author
using that text structure. one fill in the blank, two multiple-choice questions, and five short answer questions. The
students will be evaluated on if the student is able to identify the text structure and the purpose of using the text
structure.

Classroom Management Plan for the Lesson

At the beginning of class, the students know to get a pump of hand sanitizer and to sit quietly at their desk
until further instruction.
When students’ voices are high, I will remind them to keep their voices down or have their voices off.
I will raise my hand up to remind students to raise their hands when they want to speak or ask a question.
I will ask students to give a thumbs up/down to see if they are ready to move on or if they understand
something.
For off-task behavior, I will ask students what they are supposed to be doing.
I will walk around the classroom to see if students are on task.
Students know to raise their hand if they need help during the independent activity or if they have a
question.
