A Day in The Life of Alex Sander

1. Case Summary
Alex Sander is a product manager in a London Care Products. As a product manager, Alex
Sander has responsibility to make sure that his team could achieve product target and create idea
to launch the product. As a manager Alex also has good leadership soft skills such as
entrepreneurship, initiative, and curious. 3600 performance review is one of a good way to
improve anybody since they will get feedback and review from many different angles. Based on
the 3600 performance review, basically Alex Sander has some good feedback that he has a good
aptitude as a leader. However, Alex Sander also has several areas that to be well improved to
balance his superiority.

Is the current 3600 performance review is effective enough to develop people such as Alex Sander
to be better as leader?

Alex Sander is a good typical of manager, and commitment of his work is one of the
best requirements for a good manager for a company. Furthermore, Alex Sander has
several superiorities as becoming a manager such as:
• Give a direction and controlling his downward job
• He works based on his job description and obey with his job’s rules
• Always trying to help his downwards to solve their job problem

However, in their life, Alex Sander also has such leadership behavior including path-
goal clarifying which means he clarifying employees’ performance goals by giving
guidance to complete the task and also clarifying performance standard, achievement-
oriented in which Alex Sander deeply focus on goal achievement in their life such for
instance Alex Sander did worked hard to catch up their knowledge of any new product
faster, and also interaction facilitation where he occasionally did by coming to his
employees and check their job whether they need a help or not to complete their task.
Based on the case, basically Alex Sander has so many fundamental requirements to be a
good leader.

3600 performance (feedback or review) is a good way to improve someone in the


organization to aim better performance. Feedback or review is basically a process that has
to be conducted as the way to review and also to keep (sustain) the organization goals
towards each of the employee. Desires output from the feedback activity is that persistent
effort, personal growth, improved job performance and also job satisfaction. Furthermore
3600 performance is a good feedback or review method in which a person will get
feedback not only by his upward but also from their downward and colleague. Thus, the
feedback would be more general based on many points of view.

4. Problem Solving
Giving feedback, review, and rewards are some way that could be implement by a company to
develop their employees. Based on the performance improvement cycle theory, feedback and
coaching could be applied in employee performance review process. 3600 performance review is
only giving a directly feedback to a targeted person.
The better idea to improve an employee performance is by giving direct feedback and
coaching. Direct feedback means that the targeted employee would discuss with the reviewer.
Two way of communication can be worked well by using this method, thus the targeted employee
can really understand on what other people want them to improve and sustain. In addition, having
give the review, coaching method also important to make sure that the targeted employee (Alex
Sander) could really improve himself based on all the feedback toward him. This coaching
process also helps where the targeted employee has problem to improve himself in some areas
due to any challenge condition that could not be solved by himself only.

5. Recommendation
Direct feedback and coaching method is better to be applied rather than only giving indirect
feedback such as implemented in the Alex Sander case. The complete feedback by many angle
are easily to be shared and improvement process also measurable in control. Thus the process of
performance improvement can work well.
