My dear Mary,
If you have not made any plans for your Christmas holidays this year, perhaps you would
like to come and stay with us. It is a long time since we met, and both George and I would love
to see you again. We have a bigger house now, and there is plenty of room for one or two
guests. We also have a bigger garden, though I expect at Christmas-time you will be more
interested in the central-heating (which works very well, fortunately!). Do come; we look
forward to seeing you

Yours affectionately,
Margaret

Jim arrived home and discovered that he had forgotten his door key. He rang the bell,
but nobody came to open the door. He rang again, and waited but still there was no answer.
He walked round the house to see if he could find an open window, but they were all
locked. It was beginning to rain and he didn’t know what to do. Dorothy, his wife, had
obviously gone out, and he didn’t know where she had gone to, or when she would return.
He waited for half an hour. Still nobody came. Finally, feeling wet and cold and angry, he
picked up a big stone and threw it through the kitchen window. Just as he had unlocked the
window and was climbing through it he heard the front door open. His wife had come back
