All spouses of Guard and Reserve members are eligible to nominate their employers. Spouses can log on to www.esgr.org/PA to
fill out the Spouse Nomination Form. Each nominated supervisor will receive a Department of Defense Certificate of Appreciation,
presented by the spouse employee or the local volunteer from the ESGR State Committee.
About ESGR
Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve is a Department of Defense agency established in 1972 to develop and maintain
employer support for Guard and Reserve service. ESGR advocates relevant initiatives, recognizes outstanding support, increases
awareness of applicable laws, and resolves conflict between service members and employers. Paramount to ESGR’s mission is
encouraging employment of Guardsmen and Reservists who bring integrity, global perspective and proven leadership to the civil-
ian workforce. For more information about ESGR Outreach Programs, or ESGR volunteer opportunities, call (800) 336-4590 or visit

Taking the plunge

for Special Olympics

others like jumping into near freezing water, but when it’s for a
good cause, most people will charge in without thinking twice.
Last Sunday’s Penguin Plunge at Ocean Beach Park in New
London was one such event. More than 350 people; residents,
military members, and people looking to make a difference
rushed headlong into the 34 degree waters of Long Island Sound,
all to help support Special Olympics Connecticut (SOCT).
Beginning at 10 a.m. Feb. 20, people packed the Sand Bar Cafe
at Ocean Beach Park to register for the noon plunge. Though
many pre-registered for the event online, by 11 a.m. it was a
full house. While people still waited to register, others showed
off their costumes, enjoyed live entertainment, and ate hot food
before the event started.
People who wanted to take the plunge were asked to help raise
money for SOCT, with a minimum pledge of $50.
“It’s for a good cause,” said Electronics Technician 1st Class
Wilhelm Sommer, from Naval Submarine Base New London’s
