CONFERENCE

- A conference is generally
understood as a meeting of
several people to discuss/
"confer" a particular topic.  
- Conference differs from the
others in terms of size and
purpose; the term can be
used to cover the general
concept. At a conference,
innovative ideas are thrown
about and new information is
exchanged among experts.
- Most conferences have one or more keynote speakers who will deliver the
keynote speech. These are common at academic and business conferences.
The speakers chosen are eminent personalities in the related field and their
presence is meant to attract more people to attend the conference. 
TYPES OF CONFERENCE
 ACADEMIC CONFERENCE - In science and academic, a formal event where
researchers present results, workshops, and other activities.
 ATHLETIC CONFERENCE- A competitive grouping of teams, often geographical
 AUTHORS' CONFERENCE- OR WRITERS' CONFERENCE, WHERE WRITERS
GATHER TO REVIEW THEIR WRITTEN WORKS AND SUGGEST
IMPROVEMENTS
 BUSINESS CONFERENCE- Held for people working in the same company or
industry. They come together to discuss new trends and opportunities pertaining
to the business

 CONVENTION (MEETING) - Meeting of a, usually large, group of individuals

and/or companies in a certain field
 CONFERENCE- Between the two houses of a bicameral legislature
 NEWS CONFERENCE- An announcement to the press (print, radio, television)
with the expectation of questions- about the announced matter

 PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCE- A meeting with a child's teacher to discuss

grades and school performance
 PEACE CONFERENCE- A diplomatic meeting to end conflict
 PROFESSIONAL CONFERENCE- A meeting of professionals in a given subject
or profession dealing with related matters or developments

 SETTLEMENT CONFERENCE- A meeting between the plaintiff and the

respondent in lawsuit, wherein they try to settle their dispute without proceeding
to trial
 TRADE FAIR OR TRADE CONFERENCE- A conference that takes place on a
larger scale. Besides businessmen, there are members of the public who come
to network with vendors and made new connections. Such a conference consists
of workshops and white paper presentations.
 UNCONFERENCE OR OPEN SPACE CONFERENCE- A participant-driven
meeting that tries to avoid one or more aspects of a conventional conference

SEMINAR
- A form
of academic instruction,
either at an academic
institution or offered by a
commercial or professional
organization. It has the
function of bringing together
small groups for recurring
meetings, focusing each time
on some particular subject, in
which everyone present is
requested to participate. This
is often accomplished through an ongoing socratic dialogue with a seminar
leader or instructor, or through a more formal presentation of research.
- It is essentially a place where assigned readings are discussed, questions can be
raised and debates can be conducted.
- The word seminar is derived from the latin word seminarium, meaning "seed plot"

SYMPOSIUM 
- A symposium is generally
defined as a meeting
organized so that experts in
a given field can meet,
present papers, and discuss
issues and trends or make
recommendations for a
certain course of action.
- Some definitions of
symposium include a degree
of audience participation that
is less than that of a forum, thus implying a greater structure to the meeting
format.
- Symposiums have an implied academic aspect that distinguish them from
seminars. After a symposium, attendees should come away having gained a
greater degree of knowledge about a topic or a deeper understanding of an
issue. They may have heard entirely new concepts about an existing subject or
have been introduced to something completely new.

TRAINING

defines training as “the action
of teaching a person or
animal a particular skill or
type of behaviour”. 
- They can take place in large
conference theatres or small
meeting rooms and each
style of training session is
 dependent on the organisation using the facilities.  In addition to the basic
training required for a trade, occupation or profession, training may continue
beyond initial competence to maintain, upgrade and update skills
throughout working life. People within some professions and occupations may
refer to this sort of training as professional development.
- Training sessions are often for: companies, governing bodies, leaders/teachers

WORKSHOP
- The oxford english dictionary
defines a workshop as “a
meeting at which a group of
people engage in intensive
discussion and activity on a
particular subject or project”.
- Workshops, similar to
seminars, are usually much
smaller than conferences – a
workshop can be an element
of the conference structure.
It is more of a hands-on
experience for the participants with demonstrations and activities; the amount of
time one speaker addresses the group is limited.

BREAKOUT SESSIONS
- A breakout session is
generally understood to be a
relatively short session
where a small group of
attendees.
- Some breakout sessions
focus on an issue with the
intent of raising questions
that have not been
answered, while others are
designed to take frequently
asked questions and offer
solutions from a panel of
experts or from other attendees.
- Breakout sessions may also serve to create a report or list of questions that will
be presented at a later time to the entire conference. A facilitator or moderator
can guide the session while a reporter takes notes and synthesizes the
comments and input from a panel, presenters, or the meeting participants.
BANQUET
- These are generally formal
celebrations organized by a
company or organization to
celebrate achievements
within the organization and to
boost employee and member
morale. Depending on the
size of the organization,
these dinners may be a small
gathering at a local
restaurant or conducted in a
large hotel banquet hall or
unique event space like an art gallery or museum.
- Contemporary banquets serve many new purposes in addition to their traditional
purposes. These can include anything from during workplace training sessions
and formal business dinners to birthday parties and social gatherings. It is
common for a banquet to be organized at the end of academic conferences.

COLLOQIUM
- "Colloquium" is a latin
derivative that refers to an
informal meeting or seminar
which is usually of an
academic nature where
different
scholars/lecturers/specialist
deliver lectures on different
topics at each meeting. Each
presenter will then entertain
questions based on their
delivery.
- The meeting is of a dual nature where an address is followed by a question and
answer session/forum.

CONCLAVE
- Conclaves are meetings
conducted in secret. In
general, conclaves are used
to describe “closed door”
meetings between
individuals who have a
certain level of power or
influence. One of the most
 famous conclaves is the papal conclave, where cardinals meet to elect a new
pope.

FUNCTION
- A social gathering or party,
sometimes of a ceremonial
nature. A function is usually
one or one of several
gatherings that contribute to
a larger event.

RETREAT
- A retreat is a meeting that is
typically designed and
organized specifically to
facilitate the ability of a group
to step back from their day-
to-day demands and
activities for an extended
period of concentrated
discussion, dialogue, and
strategic thinking about the
organization’s future or about specific issues.

SOCIAL EVENTS
- A large gathering organized
to celebrate major life events
and religious ceremonies
- As a gathering where the
purpose is to bring people
together in a group so they
can socialize. Parties are
social gatherings, even if you
put a modifier in front of it,
such as “birthday party” or
“housewarming party”. The
ostensible goal is for people
to get together and have fun, even if the host only did it to get gifts.. 
TRADE SHOWS
- A fair is a trade
show or expo organized for
the purpose of exhibiting arts
and crafts, industrial products
and agricultural products, but
more local and on a smaller
scale. Unlike most trade
shows, entertainment and
fair are often a major draw.
- A tradeshow is an exhibition
for companies in a specific industry to showcase and demonstrate their latest

TEAM BUILDING
- Team building is a collective
term for various types of
activities used to enhance
social relations and define
roles within teams, often
involving collaborative
tasks. Team building is one
of the most widely used
group-development activities
in organizations.
- Team building is the process
of turning a group of
individual contributing employees into a cohesive team—a group of people
organized to work together to meet the needs of their customers
by accomplishing their purpose and goals.

JOB FAIR
- A job fair, also referred
commonly as a job
expo or career fair or career
expo, is an event in which
employers, recruiters, and
schools give information to
potential employees. Job
seekers attend these while
trying to make a good
impression to potential
coworkers by speaking face-
to-face with one another, filling out résumés, and asking questions in attempt to
 get a good feel on the work needed. Likewise, online job fairs are held, giving job
seekers another way to get in contact with probable employers using the internet.

CONVENTION
- Convention, in the sense of a
meeting, is a gathering of
individuals who meet at an
arranged place and time in
order to discuss or engage in
some common interest.
- The most common
conventions are based
upon industry, profession,
and fandom.
- Trade conventions typically focus on a particular industry or industry segment,
and feature keynote speakers, vendor displays, and other information and
activities of interest to the event organizers and attendees.
- Professional conventions focus on issues of concern along with advancements
related to the profession.

CONGRESS
- A congress is a formal
meeting of the representatives
of
different countries, constituent
states, organizations, trade
unions, political parties or
other groups.
- Regular coming together on a
representational basis of
several hundreds - or even
thousands - of individuals
belonging to a single
professional, cultural, religious or other group.
- A congress is often convened to discuss a particular subject. Contributions to the
presentation and discussion of the subject matter come only from members of
the organizing body.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETINGS

- An annual general meeting
(agm), or a shareholders
meeting, is a large gathering
held by publicly traded
companies.
- These meetings are held in
order to let shareholders ask
the board of directors
 questions about a company’s health, as well as to elect new members to the
board.

MEETING
- A meeting is when two or
more people come together
to discuss one or more
topics, often in a formal or
business setting, but
meetings also occur in a
variety of other
environments. 
- A gathering of two or more
people that has been
convened for the purpose of
achieving a common goal through verbal interaction, such as sharing information
or reaching agreement.

participants), training course, team-building session and kick-off event.
