Explain the importance of the 6 Principles of Interior Design in the space planning process (3

sentences per principle).

Balance
Balance as a design principle is an important element in bringing equilibrium to an interior and
design. It equalizes and approximates the visual weight of objects offering stability and makes
spaces aesthetically pleasing. The way balance is created (asymmetrically, symmetrically, or
radially) can have an effect on the eye’s perception of space and, in turn, help form an
impression cohesiveness, completion, and satisfaction.

Rhythm
Repeating elements such as colour, shape or texture can help to unify a space and create a
consistent visual experience. In addition to this, rhythm plays an important role in interior design
as it helps in how the viewer perceives the space, in terms of functionality and appearance.
When we incorporate rhythm in interior design, it gives us a set of established patterns to fall
back on and allows viewers to take in the room’s sensory information as easily as possible.

Harmony
Harmony is created when every design element found in a given space affects its counterpart
elements, sense that all elements of design fit together .This principle is used to create a sense
of cohesion in the space and put a person at ease within their environment and evoke a sense
of restfulness.

Emphasis
The principle of emphasis in interior design is the process of creating focus within a designated
space. In addition, emphasis plays an important role of conveying through a focal point, which
creates an interest in a space leaving a constant form of impact. In most cases, emphasis can
become a room’s focal point through isolation, contrast, and thoughtful placement and
interrupting that regularity right down the center to bring attention to the “one-thing-that’s-not-
like-the-others”.

Proportion
Proportion refers to the shape of an item and how it relates to other things in the room. It is
concerned with the relationship between parts of a whole and have the largest impact on spatial
functionality. It plays a role of creating a visual hierarchy that emphasizes some features while
disguising others.
Scale
Scale refers to the size of one object in relation to another. In particular, it is used when the size
of at least one of the objects is known with certainty. In design, scale is usually used to refer to
the size of an object or space in relation to the human body and through thoughtful use of
elements, have an effect on the feel of a space and its function.

Explain the importance of LIGHTING in Architectural Interiors (3 sentences)

Lighting in Architectural Interiors plays a big role of how users perceive and experience a space
because it significantly affects the appearance of geometry and mood and emotions as well,
helping architecture achieve its true purpose. The elements that come together when the right
lighting is achieved transforms an interior into a seamless combination of functionality and style.
Good lighting is all about the balance of light and shade and bringing new energy to an interior.

Explain the importance of COLORS in Architectural Interiors (3 sentences)

Choosing appropriate colors for a facility’s spaces is an important aspect of interior design
having profound influence on a space and the people in it. It has an advantage to create an
inviting, productive space and power to change moods and the mind. Each tone of color has a
significant effect on our mood, has a specific meaning, and interlinks with our mind frame.
Explain the importance of MATERIALS in Architectural Interiors (3 sentences)
Character is a vital aspect of Architectural Interiors and one of the most basic and accessible
means of conveying this idea is through the use of material. Materials in interiors design helps
to define and balance the spaces. Through the introspective use of the right materials and its
quality, result is a guarantee of aesthetic and functional durability.

Explain the importance of the proper combination if LIGHTING, COLORS and MATERIALS in
Architectural Interiors (5 sentences)
In a holistic sense of the proper combination Lighting, Colors and Materials have the profound
influence on our perception— it can affect our mood, productivity level, perceived temperature,
and even, some say, appetite. When designing interior spaces, there is a myriad of factors to
consider, including the function of the space, how much time people will spend in it, and the
mood you want the space to evoke. An integrated approach, Lighting, Colors and Materials
serve clear functional purposes and make an unquantifiable contribution to the perception of the
beauty of interiors. It can create a sense of how everything feels cohesive and put together that
feels just right. Without this three, we cannot perceive the full functionality and aesthetic
potential of spaces.
