1. Briefly describe the principles of scientific management and administrative

management. What assumptions do their perspective make about workers? To
what extent are these assumptions still valid today?

Both scientific management and administrative management were considered

part of classical management perspective which is the first important ideas to emerge
on how businesses should be operated.

According to Piyu (2019), the major difference between scientific

management and administrative management is that the former focused on the
improvements of the operation within the workplace while the latter give emphasized on
the management styles and activities that help to get the maximum benefit.

Specifically, the major contribution of scientific management is it improves labor

productivity. The proponent of scientific management, Frederick Taylor observed that
people deliberately work slower if they have will have the same income despite the
difference in output. As a solution, scientific management principle promotes science,
not the rule of thumb in the workplace, unity within the group, cooperation rather than
individual performance, and development of employees to get a good efficiency. The
most prevalent output of scientific management today is having a piecework pay system
and incentives or bonus to the employees.

Meanwhile, the principle of administrative management is that it provides an

outline on how to become a manager of a company. This principle promotes in the
workplace the division of work, authority and responsibility, discipline, unity of command
and direction, subordination, remuneration, centralization, order, equity, long term
employment, and innovation that plays a vital role in the organization.

Both scientific and administrative management principles enhance the efficiency

levels in the organization. Scientific management is more useful in low level
management while administrative management principle is more effective in top level
management. Even though they are not well recognized before, these two principles
were prevalent in practice today to be successful in achieving organizational goals.

2. Is there one best way to manage that is still waiting to be discovered? Explain.

Before we can answer the question, it is important to analyze first what is being
asked. Here, the question states one best way to manage which means a science and
not just a rule of thumb. It is asking for a systematic process that can be done in unity
by all the workers instead of a method where workers devised their own ways to do the
job. Meanwhile, the following words says still waiting to be discovered which we can
consider to be in the future.

In the rapid changing world, it is a challenge for the manager to successfully

integrate the value of management in achieving organizational goals. However, as an
accounting student, we know that while Financial Accountants is base on precision and
historical events, management is more concerned on the timeliness and future events.

In line with this, it is a challenge for the manager to have an insight and foresight
to fully understand what will happen in the future and align the organizational goals and
resources to benefit in the future. Though the future is quite risky, it is still served as an
opportunity for every organization whether big or small to succeed.

A good example is the success of Apple Inc. Apple was founded on April 1976
but only in 2006 that Apple became known around the globe (Lem Staff, 2006). In the
early 2000s, many people only know Nokia when it comes to mobile phone. However,
who would have thought what will happen in the future? It is only because of the
insights and foresight of the manager of Apple that it achieves its success while the
other mobile phone failed to have a grasp on the rapidly changing world. Up until now,
apple still has its loyal customer base since the company believes in pushing the limits
of creativity to produce interesting and valuable products for society.

Based on the facts presented, there is indeed a one best way to manage that is
still waiting to be discovered. It is through the insights and foresights of the
management in an organization by the grounds of theory and history presented in the
book. By gaining an accurate and deep understanding of something happening now, in
the past, and can accurately predict what will happen tomorrow, the organization will be

able to be prepared and have one best way to manage that is still waiting to be
discovered.
