FAST AND FURIOUS: HOBBS & SHAW

My Own Reflection

Science, technology and society studies (both abbreviated STS) is the study of how society, politics,
and culture affect scientific research and technological innovation, and how these, in turn, affect society,
politics and culture. The movie started as Hobbs and Shaw are sent to track down a globally-deadly virus
called SnowFlake which has been injected into Shaw’s MI-6 agent and sister Hattie. This virus is a product
of modern science and technology created by a scientist and ETEON (group of villains) believed that this
virus is the solution to Human Evolution, where people will become stronger and more productive because
machines will be installed on the bodies of the people who survived the virus. Due to this, ETEON sent their
enhanced assassin Brixton, whose spine is made of machine to pursue Hattie to retrieve the virus. The movie
shows that there are scientists who are experimenting on making people evolve by installing machines in
them. However, just like in the movies, the importance of technology is just second to the resilience of the
people just like how Hobbs and Shaw defeat the superhuman Brixton with people and not with machines.
This is also the reason why we have dilemmas in using technologies. We must know our limits on how to use
efficiently the available technologies before machines can dominate the world and humans become extinct.
The movie is also related to the present deadly NCoV or Novel Corona Virus because it is believed that this
virus is a bio weapon or created in the laboratory to depopulate the world which is a propaganda. Even if this
is true or not, still too much reliance of science and technology pose a threat to the life of many people in the
society so we must always be responsible and accountable on our actions.

In the movie, I enjoyed all the fighting scenes and the humors between Hobbs and Shaw. But, what
touches me the most is when Hobbs quoted what Bruce Lee, said, “The key to immortality is to first live
a life worth remembering.” At this part I reminisced the time when my teacher in grade 10 asked me what
is my goal in our school and I said, I want to leave a legacy at this school. Fast forward in the present, I
realized what my goal truly is and it is to live a life worth remembering and not a life remembered by people
because it is embarrassing or I did something wrong. I believe that people tend to remember more about our
mistakes compared to the right things we did. But this time, it is different, I want to be remembered as one of
the best students in the field of accountancy. I want to be known as a good child of my parents. I want to be
a good brother to my friends and lastly, I want to be a successful and respectable Certified Public Accountant
in the future who is clean and not corrupted by money. Just like what Brixton said, “You deal with money.
We deal with evolutionary progress” but not with machine but because my heart is my biggest muscle.

The machines in the movie played a role as a way of evolutionary progress. However, evolutionary
progress can only be achieved through violence because only the strong will remain and the weak will perish.
This remaining strong people will become superhuman because machines will be implanted on them just like
how Brixton was made by ETEON (“They created me, dismantled me”) and the reason how he became black
superman. However, technology can create pain and be the cause of ultimate death of the people the same
as how ETEON disposed Brixton because he lost in his battle against Hobbs and Shaw. On the other hand,
if technology can create virus to kill millions of people, then it is also true that only technology can create
vaccines to cure this virus which is evidenced in the movie wherein the same scientist who created the virus
is the same scientist who has the technology to extract it from the host body. But still, in the end humans are
still better than technologies. Just like what Hobbs said to Brixton “You may believe in machines. We believe
in people.” And he added “You may believe in technology. We have heart.” which means that technology
depreciates while people appreciates.

There are lots of things I learned while watching the movie Fast and Furious: Hobbs and Shaw. First
is the key to immortality is to live a life worth remembering. Even though you are already dead, you will still
remain alive in the heart of the people if you live a life worth remembering just like our national heroes.
Another is the importance of people over machines. In today’s contemporary era, employment decreased
because machines which will not be tired replaced humans in the workplace because they make work faster
and more productive. However, machine will not work without humans controlling them. In addition, humans
have feelings and they can relate on you. It is still better to work in an environment where someone
appreciates you instead of working with machines who you cannot talk and share your problems with. Lastly
is the importance of friends and families. Hobbs showed his love to his brother, Jonah by saying “This place
has something nowhere else does. You.” Moreover, Shaw proves that the Shaw Family never, never give
up. No one can stop a love of a brother to save his dying sister. This made me appreciate my sister whenever
she treated me before in Chowking every Friday before we go home because she is living in my aunt in
weekdays and we only meet every Friday-end of class and weekends. Today, she is happily married with
two lovely cute children which are my pamangkins. I promise to give back the favor to her daughters and give
them everything that we did not have when we are children when we were young because we are just poor.
Imagine, I just got my own phone when I finished my grade 10 and I never experienced to own a PSP or
Gameboy. But still, I was lucky because there are no distractions in my study and I maintained my grades,
develop a study habits, and a scholar now. This proves that to be successful, we must limit the use of
technology in our everyday life. That is why, whenever I used all my time playing games and using technology
for leisure, it is more likely that I will get low scores on exams.
