 Applying the social systems theory, social work can be viewed as a profession that helps people interact more effectively
with their social environment.
 In helping people to achieve their goals of improved social functioning, the social worker must have handles in fortifying and
securing the necessary resources to attain the goals of the clients.
 According to Morales and Sheafor, there are three significant characteristics in the practice of social work, namely: 1.
Fundamental goals of the practice activity 2. Settings where the practice occurs and 3. The use of a generalist or specialist

 LESSON 3: CLIENTELE AND AUDIENCES IN SOCIA L WORK

 In casework, the individual is the principal client and efforts of helping are focused on her/him.
 De Guzman explains that the person’s inability to manage stress which may have been a result of a distressful situation or
problem caused her/him or those concerned with her/him to seek professional help.
 The worker must understand that the person is a “biopsychological being” where she/he is made up of at least three parts or
subsystems- the physical, the psychological and the social.
 Below are some of the clients who may need the social worker or the agency’s help through casework:
 Children who are either abandoned, neglected, orphaned, abused, or exploited
 Children in conflict with the law, street children, children living with or affected by HIV

 Voluntary Clients are those persons who opted to voluntarily seek the assistance of worker or the services of the agency due
to a problem or a difficulty which he/she thinks he/she cannot do anything by him/herself.
 Involuntary clients are those certain types of individuals in need who may not even consider asking for help because they
think that they are doing fine and will survive somehow or they are unaware of the agencies that can provide with them some
assistance.
 Principles in Teaching social Group Work
 The Principle of Planned group Formation
 The Principle of specific objectives

 Social work is practiced either in a primary or a secondary setting.

 Primary Setting- are those agencies whose programs and services are direct purview of social work.
 Secondary Setting- are agencies, institutions or organizations whose primary function is not to provide social
welfare services but employ social workers to support/strengthen/complement their own services.
