Applied Social Sciences Vs. Social Sciences?
Social Sciences are disciplines concerned with the systematic study of social
phenomena. This means that it aims to described and give meaning to everything
happening around us. “Social sciences” is defined as the study of human society.

Applied Social science is an integrated science merging across and uplifting all social
sciences disciplines (theories, belief, etc.) in addressing a wide range of issues in a
contemporary, innovative, and dynamic way.

Together, It INTEGRATES or COMBINES theory learned in UCSP, Philosophy and most of

all DISS, together with critical thinking skills necessary to fully address social phenomena.
Applied social science therefore, is a broad field that draws on different social and
perspective and combines THEORY + PRACTICE = ANSWERS TO COMPLEXITY
OF SOCIAL ISSUES.

To give you an overview of What really is DIASS, It can be simplified

into an orientation course to what you are about to face as a HUMSS student
in the future if you truly decide to take on the career paths that you are
mastering now and later on your college life. Furthermore, this course can be
broken down into three main career paths or disciplines which are
COUNSELING, SOCIAL WORK, and COMMUNICATION. These
three make up the main focus of Disciplines and Ideas in the Applied Social Sciences

What is the Discipline of Counseling?

It is a relationship characterized by the application of one or more psychological counseling theories
and a recognized set of communication skills appropriate to a client’s intimate concerns, problems or
aspirations (Feltham and Dryden 2004).

Context and Basic Concepts of Counseling
Peer as Context
Friends have strong influence on youth and that means most
crisis are either rooted or can be understood through this context.

Neighborhood as Context
Interactions between the family and its neighborhood as
immediate context area also important to consider.

Culture as Context
A client and his/her culture is a factor far greater than anything
because it compels how one looks at a problem and why by
his/her upbringing in his/her culture.

Rights, Responsibilities, and Accountabilities of Counselors

 Counselors are licensed and therefore protected by the government.
 Counselors follow certain scientific theories, practices which is held together by specific
standards and ethics.
 Clients should fully understand the nature of concerns and the counsellor as well. A contract
to take action on a mutually agreed upon problem (Peterson and Nisenholz 1987).

Code of Ethics of Counselors

 Principle 1: Respect for the rights and dignity of the client
Principle 2: Competence
Principle 3: Responsibility
Principle 4: Integrity
 Respecting human rights and dignity
 Respect for the client’s right to be self-governing
 A commitment to promoting the client’s well-being
 Fostering responsible caring
 Fair treatment of all clients and the provision of adequate services
 Equal opportunity to all clients and the provisions of adequate services
 Ensuring the integrity if practitioner-client relationship
 Fostering the practitioner’s self-knowledge and care self
 Enhancing the quality of professional knowledge and its application
 Responsibility to the society.

Unethical Behaviour & Ethical Codes

First let us consider what would constitute unethical behavior from a counselor. Consider this list.
1. Incompetence, that is, inadequate knowledge and the absence of skills necessary for
professional behavior.

2. Lack of integrity, moral commitment and sound professional judgment to adhere to acceptable
standards of right and wrong action.

3. Violating confidences. Information presented in a counseling relationship is confidential.

4. Exceeding the level of professional competence. Counselors must recognize their strengths
and limitations in serving their clients in the most competent manner - or refer them to other
experts.

5. Imposing values on clients. It is a responsibility of counselors to be aware of his/her values

and of their impact on others.

6. Creating dependence on the part of the clients to meet the counselor's own needs, e.g., sexual
relations and social interactions.

7. Improper advertising, especially advertising that presents the counselor as one who has the
skills, competence and/or credentials, that he, or she, does not actually possess.

8. Charging fees for private counseling to those who are entitled to free services through the
counselor's employing institution, and/or using one's job to recruit clients for a private
practice.

Principles and Core Values of Counseling

The core values of the counsellor are a set of attitudes and skills
which have a special regard for the integrity, authority
and autonomy of the client and are firmly based on the counsellor
having total respect for universal human rights and for the person and
cultural differences.

 Knowledge – A counselor should be knowledgeable enough

in handling his/her clients. He must master the art and science of doing counseling and can
provide rich and understandable information towards explaining different situations and
capable enough to assess client’s needs or concerns.

 Integrity – Being honest is one aspect every counselor must consider. One should not
fabricate stories or phenomena to manipulate a client or to create false hopes towards it
clients and even colleagues. Integrity is performing and delivering quality service in attempt
to offer reliable counseling experience, assessments and results.

 Collaboration – community linkages is one key to widen the network of a counselor and to
be able to provide connections which can benefit the welfare of the clients.

 Client/customer focus – just like in a classroom set-up, the counselor must consider making
the client the focus of whole counseling process. An empathic listening is a criterion in
achieving a well-rounded and effective counseling. Remember that the experiences and
thoughts being shared by your clientele is the bank to elicit your expertise.
