Who are Counselors and Where can
you find them?
Guidance counselors or “Counselors” in the
general term can easily be defined as people
who counsel, give advice and help you when
you have a problem. In the Philippines,
especially in school settings, being called in
the guidance counselor’s office is usually a
jittery and nerve wrecking moment. But what
does a counselor actually there for?

Counselor: A counselor’s role includes aiding one in coping with a

crisis. In some settings, counseling includes premarital and marital
counseling, grief and loss (divorce, death, or amputation), domestic
violence and other types of abuse, special counseling situations like
terminal illness (death and dying) as well counseling of emotionally
and mentally disturbed individuals. Counseling could be short-term
(brief counseling) or long-term.

Roles, Functions and Competencies of Counselors

• As we begin with what really a guidance counsellor does, let us first define
their number one role which is to assist the person or persons in realizing a
change in behavior or attitude, seeking achievement or goals, finding
help, and in some cases, the role of counsellors includes the teaching of
social skills, effective communication, spiritual guidance, decision-making,
and career choices. To help a client is a crisis, summarizes the role of a
counsellor.

• According to R.A No. 9258 (Sec. 2-3) defines a guidance counsellor as a

natural person who has been professionally registered and licensed by a
legitimate state entity and by virtue of specialized training to perform the
functions of guidance and counselling. The guidance counselor’s
functions include the use of an integrated approach to develop a well-
functioning individual primarily through:
1. helping a client develop potentials to the fullest;
2. helping a client plan to utilize his or her potentials to the fullest;
3. helping a client plan his or her future in accordance with his or her
abilities, interests, and needs; and
4. sharing and applying knowledge related to counselling, such as
administering to a wide range of human development services.

• Some of many competencies of a guidance counsellor are as follows:
 Administer and maintain counselling programs like career path
decision making.
 Design and implement programs for group dynamics and the
independent self-production development.
 On an actual crisis situation, the counsellor may do the following
1. Clarify the issues that need resolving.
2. Make a list of solutions and define its possible outcomes.
3. Giving the client the power or will to pursue the goal of
getting better.

To remember: A guidance counsellor should be as flexible as possible. They

have the heaviest burden of avoiding transference and counter transference
in their everyday life in the career. Being able to keep with the hustle and
bustle and still keep a well-balanced personal life is the biggest challenge for
all counsellors.
