Language is our Identity

Can you imagine how different your world can be if you stop
speaking your first language? Indeed, it would be very weird. All
the things you can think of can no longer be expressed through you
as the language of one spoken is now gone. A person should
communicate through language which allows other people to react
and respond to. Ludwig Wittgenstein once said, “The limits of my
language are the limits of my world”, he means that language is
key in communication with the world. In fact, having a narrow or
limited language basically limiting yourself to understanding of
your world and the understanding of the world about you. To
elaborate this idea, culture is the best example. Cultures can be
represented in many ways such as celebrations, public gatherings,
media, clothing, religious activity and mostly language. If
language was not present in a culture, it would not be possible to
distinguish them from other cultures. A person’s background can be
determined by listening any accents they have; it might be a little
offensive but that is not the point I am trying to get across my
point is “language is connected with our identity.”
Language is a big part of our identity, and it is essential
to every aspect in interaction with the world around us. As a
child, we begin by learning one language, our mother tongue which
sets a way for our parents to communicate with us, throughout our
life. Through language we can identify who we are. For example, we
go to school and talk to other people, through those people we can
communicate and learn more things about the world around us. Thus,
giving a person a personality of knowing what to do and what to
not do, basically builds a person’s own identity. As we grow older,
we experience many things and communicate with various people with
the help of language. We interact with different people and develop
emotions—likes, dislikes, wants, etc. Once we grow old enough, we
share our wisdom knowledge with our future generation. To conclude,
language is part of everyday life; it helps shape a person by
allowing them the ability to learn new things, share experiences,
educate other people and many more. Without our language it would
be impossible to communicate with someone.
