D. Read the text and answer the questions.

American lions were one of the dangerous cats on the planet. They lived in all parts
of North America and in the northern parts of South America. They were larger and
much stronger than modern lions. The average size of these animals was 3 meters
and 350 kilograms.
American lions were very fast. They were carnivorous, so they hunted for other
animals. Horses, deer, camels and mammoths were their prey.
Scientists don’t know the reason why American lions became extinct at the end of the
Ice Age, 13,000 years ago, but they have different theories. Some of them believe
that climate change caused their extinction. Others think that people hunted them.

Some animals like Dodo birds and American lions extinct now. There are also 1,000 different
endangered species in the world, and about 450 of them live in the United States. Pandas,
polar bears and elephants are examples of endangered animals. Scientists believe that there
are many reasons for this. First of all, animals need a healthy environment to survive. They
need air, food, water and a safe place to live. Global warming can be very dangerous for
them because when the climate changes and temperature rises, animals lose their habitats.
People also harm their habitats. They cut down trees, put forests on fire and pollute rivers
and lakes.
