Student Code of Conduct 2

Background

Fred Roberts Middle School is in the Pasadena Independent School District based in Pasadena

Texas, one of the larger school districts in Texas. Fred Roberts Middle School is a fifth and sixth

grade campus with about 600 students. These students are served by 100 staff members in the

suburban area of Houston/Pasadena.

Student Code of Conduct Value Statement

The student code of conduct has been prepared in conjunction with teachers, students, members

of the community and administrators to guarantee a representation of diverse perspectives. The

student code of conduct reflects the ethics and values of Fred Roberts Middle School. The code

of conduct is designed to ensure the best learning environment that promotes the academic,

social, and emotional growth and development of all students. To achieve this, a disciplined

environment is required and the code of conduct is a tool to develop self-discipline in all

students. Positive and negative consequences of behavior are recognized to encourage

appropriate behavior and discourage any behaviors that interfere with the mission and vision of

the school.

Behavioral Expectations (Set in I will statements for the student perspective)

 I will use appropriate language and show respect to others

 I will only use technology when it’s permitted by the teacher or administration

 I will dress for success and follow the dress code at all times

 I will do my best on my work and concentrate on my own assignments

 I will walk at all times to ensure the safety of others

A school campus often contains many adults and children from different backgrounds.

Even if a campus has little variety in racial diversity, students come from families with different

beliefs and values. It is necessary to have s student code of conduct to give students and parents

an outline of expectations for the mission and vision of the campus. As a leader on campus, it is

imperative that the student code of conduct promotes the best learning environment for all

students.

It is important that parents not only know their rights, but their responsibilities to the

campus and their child. I included this because it’s very important for parents to know the code

of conduct as well as their student. I would have parents sign the code of conduct to

acknowledge that they understand the code of conduct. This is also a way for parents to reinforce

the code of conduct and support the campus. They can also understand the responsibilities

expected of them to work together with the campus towards a common goal for student success.

A student cannot be successful without attending their courses. I feel that it is important

to instill good habits of students showing up to school. Missing school can create huge gaps in

learning, which could lead to academic failure. Without a solid attendance policy, students can

easily slip through the cracks by missing a day here and there that eventually adds up to a lot of

time lost.

If a campus does not require uniforms, a dress code policy needs to be put into place.

Students have a habit of pushing the dress code when it comes to how they dress. Dress code

policies have to be updated annually. This is often a very controversial topic with parents,

students and the school as well as the community. Hair color, contact lenses color, and phrases

on shirts can all distract from the learning environment. It’s important that all stakeholders are on

the same page when it comes to the student dress code.

Bullying has become a world-wide situation. Bullying incidents are continuously on the

rise and schools have to enforce bullying prevention programs as a top priority. A strong

bullying policy that has input from all stakeholders will create transparency on the school’s anti-

bullying policy.

A cell phone is at the tips of everyone’s fingers. Cell phones can create innovative

learning opportunities but they can also disrupt the learning environment when a student does not

use them properly. It’s essential that schools have a cell phone policy that students and parents

are aware of.

Since students are coming from different home lives with different values and

viewpoints, it is inevitable that students will run into conflict with each other. It is a tremendous

liability when students engage in physical fights with each other. There should be big

consequences to deter any fighting on campus.

Drugs, alcohol, and controlled substances can have major consequences for adults who

violate the policies, so on a school campus, there should be serious disciplinary actions for

students who bring these items to campus as well as use these items on campus. As a leader on

campus, I would incorporate a drug free program for students and the community to educate all

stakeholders on the effects of drugs and alcohol.

Consequences or discipline for any rules broken for the student code of conduct should

be transparent and clear. All stakeholders should have access to the consequences. There should

be a list that has all possible consequences available to students, teachers, and parents. This will

help to prevent any discriminatory disciplinary actions towards a group of students. Also, if

students are educated on the consequences for breaking the rules of the student code of conduct,

they may be less likely to break the rules.

Student Code of Conduct 6

Students often get excited when they have a substitute teacher because they know they

can push the limits of the student code of conduct. Administrators often deal with unacceptable

behavior when a substitute is in a classroom. When there is a policy in the student code of

conduct of the expectations when a substitute is in the classroom, students will be discouraged to

exhibit unacceptable behavior.

The student code of conduct provides guidelines to ensure the safety and success of the

learning environment. These few topics are absolutely necessary but just the tip of the iceberg.

The student code of conduct should explain in great detail how each topic or policy works. The

student code of conduct should be written to meet the needs of your campus. As a campus leader,

it is vital that the student code of conduct is required by all stake holders and updated annually.
