Cassie, Sam and their father find a summer camp in use as a refuge

a 4th Wave and they will take the children to safety at Wright-
Patterson Air Force Base, intending to bring the buses back to retrieve the adults. Cassie is separated
from Sam, and witnesses the Army massacring all the adults, her father included. Cassie makes her way
toward the base, but is shot in the leg by a sniper and passes out. About a week later, she wakes up in the
farmhouse of a young man named Evan Walker, who saved her. Cassie leaves towards the base with
Evan, but learns that he is an Other, sent years ago as a sleeper agent and merged his consciousness into
a human host. The sleepers roam their designated zones, killing human survivors. Evan admits his
humanity was reactivated when he saw her, disagrees with the invasion and lets her leave. He warns that
Colonel Vosch and the military are possessed by the consciousness of individual Others.

At the base, the military have used deception and technology to convince the rescued children that the
humans outside the base have been possessed. They provide military training to the children, forming
them into squads to go on kill missions outside the base. Sam has been placed into a squad led by Ben, a
boy Cassie had a crush on, along with Ringer, a tough teenage girl, Dumbo and Teacup. While out on a
kill mission, Ringer removes her military implant, causing her to register as an Other-possessed human
on the squad's scopes. The squad deduces the plan to have them kill real unpossessed humans, making
them the 5th Wave. Ben sends his squad into the woods and returns to base, claiming his squad was
killed, for the purpose of retrieving Sam, who was left behind. Ben confronts Colonel Vosch about child
warriors being the 5th Wave and Cassie kills Sergeant Reznik during her one-on-one indoctrination
spiel. Ben and Cassie find each other and leave to find Sam. Evan sets off numerous bombs and advises
them to quickly find Sam before the destruction of the entire facility. Colonel Vosch and the surviving
military Others evacuate with the human children by military aircraft. Cassie, Ben and Sam escape, with
help from Ringer, just as Evan completes the destruction of the base. Ben's squad is reunited, and Cassie
ponders the strength of hope as humanity's driving force for survival.

Production

Development

In March 2012, Columbia Pictures picked up the film rights to the trilogy, with Graham King and Tobey
Maguire attached as producers.[6][7] On April 15, 2014, it was officially announced that Chloë Grace
Moretz would star as Cassie Sullivan, and that J Blakeson would direct from a script by Susannah
Grant.[8][9] From June through August 2014, Nick Robinson and Alex Roe joined the film as male
protagonists Ben Parish and Evan Walker, respectively, while Liev Schreiber was cast as the
villain.[10][11] Over the following months, Maika Monroe, Zackary Arthur, Tony Revolori, Ron
Livingston, Maggie Siff, and Talitha Bateman joined the film.[12][13][14][15]

Filming

Principal photography began on October 18, 2014, in Atlanta, Georgia.[16] Three months later, on
January 11, a planned explosion of a bus in downtown Macon, Georgia for the film went awry when it
spread wider than planned, blowing out more than forty windows on Cotton Avenue, collapsing ceilings,
destroying store fronts, setting one building on fire, and leaving soot on the brick buildings as well. The
production company promised to cover all damages caused by the 3:45 am incident, but the work that
was done was done badly and remained incomplete twenty-eight months later.[17][18]

Livett's Launches provided filming support for the scene showing the destruction of Tower Bridge by a
tsunami.[19]

Filming officially ended on January 17, 2015.[20]

Music

In April 2015, it was announced that Henry Jackman would compose the music for the film.[21]

Release
Columbia Pictures originally set the film a release date for January 29, 2016.[22] On April 30, 2015, the
release date was changed from its original release date of January 29, 2016, to an earlier date of January
15, 2016.[23] However, in December 2015, the release date was pushed back from January 15, 2016, to
January 22, 2016.[24][25] It was released on January 14, 2016 in Australia, Germany and the Middle
East.[26]

Marketing

An international trailer for the film was released on Sony Pictures' official YouTube account on
September 1, 2015.[27]

The film was released for home media on May 3, 2016. The film was released online on various video
sites two weeks prior to this.

Reception

Box office

The 5th Wave grossed $34.9 million in North America and $75 million in other territories for a
worldwide total of $109.9 million, against a production budget of $54 million.[28]

The film was released in North America on January 22, 2016, alongside Dirty Grandpa and The Boy,
and was projected to gross $10–14 million from 2,908 theaters in its opening weekend.[29] It made
$475,000 from its Thursday night screenings and $3.5 million on its first day.[30] It went on to gross
$10.3 million in its opening weekend, finishing 6th at the box office.[31]

Critical response

The review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes reported that 15% of critics have given the film a
positive review based on 137 reviews, with an average rating of 4.22/10. The site's critics consensus
reads, "With unimpressive effects and plot points seemingly pieced together from previous dystopian YA
sci-fi films, The 5th Wave ends up feeling like more of a limp, derivative wriggle."[32] On Metacritic, the
film has a score of 33 out of 100 based on 30 critics, indicating "generally unfavorable reviews".[5]
Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "B–" on an A+ to F scale.[31]

Jeffrey M. Anderson of The San Francisco Examiner said of the film, "Every plot turn and every line of
dialogue has been borrowed from somewhere else, and everything is utterly, totally predictable", noting
how the film "steals material from (but does not stop at) the Twilight, Hunger Games and Divergent
franchises."[33] Anthony Lane of The New Yorker faulted the film as a "marketing wheeze dressed up as
an art form, and stupendously summarized by the image of Cassie hurrying through the woods carrying
both an assault rifle and a Teddy bear", adding that the film "appears to have been designed by some
crazed Oedipal wing of the N.R.A."[34]

Rob Vaux of the Sci-Fi Movie Page gave the film one star out of five, saying, "The Young Adult
adaptation craze hits a low point with this aimless, purposeless alien invasion story that wastes a fine
cast."[35] In the San Francisco Chronicle, Mick LaSalle wrote, "rarely does a movie that fails so utterly
start so well", falling apart ahead of the fifth wave. As to a possible trilogy, "if we’re not really vigilant,
and look to the skies, and prepare, they’re going to make at least two more of these things. We’ve got to
beat back the invasion now".[36] Eddie Cockrell of Variety gave the film a mixed review, saying, "The 5th
Wave is an effectively decent post-apocalyptic, young adult, world-in-the-balance survival thriller" with
an "arrestingly original spin on trendy genre tropes", although he suggested that fans of the book may
have "issues with what has been edited".[37]

Brian Truitt of USA Today gave the film a positive review, stating that it "is an inviting sci-fi invasion"
and "nicely stokes the imagination of a new generation of science-fiction movie nerds". He praised
Moretz and Robinson as "equally strong" co-leads.[38] Shannon Harvey of The West Australian also gave
the film a positive review, writing, "It’s actually got a lot going for it, from acting prodigy Chloe Grace
Moretz as the kind of tough but fragile heroine you can cheer for to handsome production values, several
plot twists".[39] Michael Patterson of Moviepilot gave the film a positive review, calling it a "thrilling
story of survival".[40]

Yancey stated in an interview with Lightspeed Magazine that the
No. of books 3
basis for The 5th Wave came from a question he asked his wife about
her worst fears. "It was one of those three a.m. conversations where
your mind starts going, and I asked her, on the spur of the moment, 'What is your greatest fear?' She
said, without hesitation, 'Alien abduction.'" Yancey continued on, telling how he developed the plot for
the series. "It was basically trying to think like an alien, and considering the fact that if they are out
there, they probably wouldn’t attack without getting to know us very, very well. They would learn how we
think, they would learn about what do humans do in times of crisis, and they would turn that to their
own advantage. So, when I was working through how the attacks might work, I realized first that it
couldn’t just be one attack—the world’s too big—you’d have to do it in stages, or waves." The first book
was officially published on 8 May 2013.[2]

Books

The 5th Wave

The 5th Wave is the first book in the series and was released on May 7, 2013.

The book opens in the midst of the Fourth Wave and follows Cassie's quest to find her brother, Sammy,
after he is taken by U.S. Army soldiers. Cassie is shot by an Other-affiliated sniper, a "Silencer", from the
woods on her trek, and is later rescued by Evan Walker, who nurses her back to health and agrees to help
her find her brother. Meanwhile, Sammy arrives at Wright-Patterson AFB, which is now a "training
camp" called Camp Haven. It is revealed over the course of the story that the soldiers are recruiting
(truly, abducting) children into an army, telling them they are the last hope for fighting back against the
Others. Sammy is placed in Squad 53 and befriends squadmate Ben Parish, who is coincidentally Cassie's
long-lost crush from high school. After the two set out, Cassie and Evan are attacked by a squad from
Wright-Patterson, and, after seeing how easily Evan dispatches them, Cassie finds out that Evan was the
Silencer who originally shot her. He then helped her because he had fallen in love and couldn't bring
himself to kill her. The two, though uneasily, coordinate a plan to extract Sammy then begin executing it.
While deployed, Ben and his squadmate Ringer start to piece together their true purposes and learn that
Wright-Patterson is actually run by the Others. It is revealed that the Others are masquerading as a
resistance force, abducting and training the children into a fighting force, which they will deploy as the
Fifth Wave to end humanity. Ben and Ringer decide to bolt with the rest of Squad 53, but Ben insists on
going back for Sammy, who was left on base due to his age.

Ben and Cassie both enter the base. They eventually run into each other and join each other. They find
Sammy, but are taunted and thwarted by the acting commander of the base, Colonel Alexander Vosch.
Evan saves them and says his goodbyes to Cassie before he detonates bombs that level the base, though
he is lost in the process. Cassie, Ben, and Sammy ride off with Squad 53 as Wright-Patterson is
destroyed.

The book was adapted into a film by J Blakeson and Columbia Pictures, under the title The 5th Wave,
and was released on January 22, 2016. The film was mildly successful, though news is still pending
regarding the production of a sequel.

The Infinite Sea

The Infinite Sea is the second installment in the series, released on September 16, 2014.

The book becomes much more involved with the members of Squad 53 and the character Ringer. The
group takes refuge in an old hotel near the ruins of Wright-Patterson, at Cassie's insistence that Evan is
still alive. Ringer sets out to find an alternate route, though it goes awry when she mistakes Teacup, a
small girl of the squad, for a Silencer, shoots her, and is taken by an approaching helicopter. Evan is
revealed to have survived, having been rescued by another Silencer named Grace. Evan attempts to kill
Grace after he finds out she is hunting Cassie, and though he fails, he manages to flee during an attack by
hidden assailants. Evan finds the hotel Cassie is stationed at, though he is shot and knocked out in a
misunderstanding with Squad 53. Cassie tends to him, while Ben angrily awaits his awakening. Later, a
helicopter quickly flies over the hotel, and then a small girl, whom Sammy identifies as one Megan,
appears. Evan wakes up and warns them that she is rigged with a bomb that explodes when it comes into
contact with human breath. Evan and Cassie extract the bomb from Megan's throat. Grace appears and,
after a violent confrontation, is killed when Private Poundcake detonates the bomb near her, also killing
himself and destroying the hotel.

The second part of the story follows Private Ringer. She is taken to a base somewhere, similar to Wright-
Patterson, and meets the alive-and-well Colonel Vosch. Vosch constantly thwarts her with mind games
and preaches to her a philosophy that "rage is not the answer". She semi-befriends a recruit called Razor,
who is aware that Vosch and the staff of the base are indeed the Others. Vosch installs Ringer with a
piece of technology, the "twelfth system", that enhances her strength. He also reveals to Ringer that
Silencers were never actually Others, just humans planted with fake memories and enhanced by the
twelfth system with a link to the alien Mothership. It is concluded that there are only dozens of true
Others in the world, and that the Mothership is the last remnant of their society programmed with the
goal of eradicating humans. Ringer and Razor attempt to escape, though Razor secretly conspired with
Vosch, and they were being monitored the entire time. Ringer learns, neutralizes Razor, and runs off, but
not fast enough to evade Vosch, who incapacitates her. Razor is ordered to rejuvenate Ringer, though he
does more and the two sleep together in a rough, hazy love. When they arrive back on base, Razor kills
Teacup, whom Vosch used as a bargaining chip, in order to set Ringer free. Razor is shot dead, and
Ringer escapes the base.

As the novel closes, Cassie and Squad 53 recover from the bomb that destroyed the hotel, when Evan,
weak and exhausted, emerges from the woods.

The book was noted for its dark appeal, and was released to the same good reception as its predecessor.

The Last Star

The Last Star, the third and final book in The 5th Wave series, was released on May 24, 2016.

The Fifth Wave is still commencing, or so the characters believe. Ringer and Evan know that once Vosch
and the other few Others are withdrawn from the surface, the Mothership will drop massive bombs on
the surface to obliterate any trace of humanity left on Earth. Cassie and Squad 53 settle in the dead
Silencer Grace's former home. Ringer returns to Vosch knowing that he will kill Ben Parish and the rest
of Squad 53 if she does not kill the persistently rebellious Evan Walker for him. She takes a helicopter to
the town that the squad stationed themselves in and is attacked by a Silencer. She is met by Ben after the
Silencer is killed, and the two head to the house. Ringer immediately attempts to kill Evan, but they are
interrupted by an incoming helicopter. Evan realizes why Ringer intended to kill him and he submits and
is taken.

The group devises a plan to not only save Evan but to end the Others permanently. Cassie and Ringer
infiltrate the base via a hijacked helicopter. Ringer detonates several bombs to incite chaos on the base,
and, after many complications, they reach the command center of the base. Ben, having stayed behind to
protect Sam and Megan, is attacked by a patrol and the three are taken back to the base. Cassie and
Ringer attempt to find Evan's data on the CPU to locate him, though they do not know how to sift
through each cell individually, and so Cassie downloads the data of every logged person to her own head
to find it. She learns everything there is to know about anything who was ever downloaded in the CPU,
and she learns the codes and layout of the base. Evan arrives, now completely devoid of humanity at the
hands of the twelfth system. He fights Ringer and disables her easily. However, he walks into a trap
when Cassie drops a live electric cable on the wet surface beneath him (as a result of the sprinkler
system). Ringer wakes up to see Vosch, who has become attached to her and wishes to bring her with
him in his extraction pod. The conversation is only a decoy from Ringer, allowing Cassie to shoot and kill
him from behind. Cassie then uses the knowledge she gained to open Vosch's escape pod and she
ascends into the sky. Ringer gets ahold of a device from Vosch that will electrocute any soldier with a
tracking implant in them. Without much else of a choice, she activates it. Ben, Sam, and Megan dive out
of their helicopter as the soldiers and pilot die, and they realize Cassie and Ringer must still be alive.

Cassie, now ascending to the Mothership, has a chance to glimpse the memories that she now has from
tens of thousands of people. She begins to truly think about what humanity is worth, when the pod nears
the Mothership. She takes out an explosive pill from her pocket that Vosch originally gave to Ringer so
she could kill herself rather than be destroyed in the bombs of the Fifth Wave. She bites down on the pill,
and the Mothership explodes. Ben and the kids witness this to their sorrow and delight. They enter the
base and find Ringer paralyzed on the floor.

Some time later, the group has settled down in a house in Marble Falls, with Ben and Ringer raising Sam
and Megan like their own children, and Evan (the twelfth system having kept him alive and the group
having restored his memories and humanity with the CPU) watches over them. Seeing no future for
himself there, he sets off away from the four, on a mission to kill every single Silencer and Fifth Waver
there is left in the world.

Characters

Main Characters

Cassiopeia "Cassie" Marie Sullivan - the main protagonist of the series. Her namesake is the
constellation Cassiopeia. Both of her parents died in the first four waves. Her brother Sammy is taken by
The Others to a "training camp" called Camp Haven, formerly, Wright-Patterson AFB. She is seventeen
years old and is described as a short, strawberry-blonde girl with average features.

Evan Walker - a farm boy from rural Ohio. All of his family and girlfriend were killed in the Third
Wave by the Red Death. Earlier in his life at a carnival, he meets Grace, who is the only person he finds
to be like him, an Other. He saves Cassie after she is shot by an Other sniper, the "Silencer". Cassie soon
finds out that Evan is actually an Other and not truly human. He is described as being a tall boy, at least
eighteen or nineteen years old, being very muscular with chocolate-brown hair. Cassie also notes his soft
hands. He develops strong feelings for Cassie, and so does she. Though, these feelings are strained when
Cassie learns that Evan is an Other. Evan is rescued by Grace, who tries to seduce him, but, after they are
attacked and Grace is wounded, he makes his way to Cassie. Grace, however, follows him there. A
confrontation ensues, after which Poundcake blows up the hotel after Evan was left behind in the hotel,
and it is not clear if Evan survives. However, at the end of The Infinite Sea, he emerges from the woods
to find Cassie.

Benjamin "Ben" Thomas Parish or "Zombie" - the varsity quarterback of the football team at
Cassie's school. Cassie secretly had a crush on him. His family was killed during the first four waves by a
group of psychotic looters. He is crushed by the fact that he ran while his baby sister was killed. He keeps
a locket with a photo of her. He becomes a member of Camp Haven's makeshift army, not knowing that
they are The Others (though he eventually finds out), taking the nickname "Zombie". After one of his
squadmates goes crazy, or "Dorothy", Private Ringer replaces him. He obsesses with getting her to smile.
Cassie describes him as overall gorgeous.
Marika "Ringer" - a member of Squad 53. Her father was an Atheist and a chess player. He taught her
how to play. Marika's father was usually drunk. Her father is infected with the Red Death and dies of the
disease. Marika wandered through the wilderness before forcefully being recruited into Camp Haven's
army, where she took the nickname "Ringer". She is a replacement after Private Tank of Squad 53 went
crazy, "Dorothy", and pulled a gun on his squad. Zombie is obsessed with getting Ringer to smile. On
their first patrol, she and Zombie find that Camp Haven's officials are actually The Others. She is
described as having glossy black hair and mild Asian features. In The Infinite Sea, she grows closer to
Private Teacup, and, after being captured, grows feelings for a recruit named Razor.

Sammy "Nugget" Sullivan - Cassie's five-year-old brother. At his refugee camp, he boards a bus from
Camp Haven and is recruited into its army, unbeknownst to his father's death. He joins Squad 53 and
friends Zombie deeply. Sammy is not allowed to go on his squad's patrol due to his age. (We later find
out the purpose of kids his age at Camp Haven in The Infinite Sea.) Zombie, Cassie, and Evan unite after
Commander Vosch attempts to kill Sammy. Evan destroys the base, though it is not clear whether he
survives or not, and Cassie, Sam and Ben escape.

Secondary Characters

Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Vosch - the leading officer at Camp Haven. He is sadistic and cruel.
He survives the destruction of Camp Haven and "enhances" Ringer with the twelfth system, a piece of
Other technology designed to enhance the human anatomy in ways such as strength, agility, and speed.
Vosch also tries to kill Sammy via electrocution while having Zombie and Cassie watch, though Evan
managed to cut the power at Camp Haven just in time. Vosch also personally killed Cassie's father at her
refugee camp.

Grace - a Silencer like Evan. They befriended each other before the waves began. Grace saves Evan after
he destroys Camp Haven. One night after one of her hunts, she tries to seduce Evan, but he attacks her
and renders her unconscious. Believing her to be dead, Evan heads back to the hotel Cassie's group has
taken refuge in. Grace follows him to Cassie's group where she then attacks them. After this violent
confrontation, Private Poundcake, now mortally wounded, goes back to the hotel to retrieve the bomb
dropped by Sammy and detonates it an arms-length away from Grace, killing both of them.

Dumbo - the medical officer in Squad 53. One of his most prominent features is his extraordinarily
large ears, like his namesake.

Allison "Teacup" or "Cup" - a seven-year-old member of Squad 53. She is described as "the meanest
seven-year-old you've ever seen" by Zombie. Teacup grows close to Ringer after the destruction of Camp
Haven. She is shot by Ringer who mistakes her for an Other. Teacup is captured alongside Ringer and
Vosch uses Teacup as leverage against Ringer. Teacup is killed by Razor so Vosch will have no more
leverage against her.

Poundcake - a chubby member of Squad 53 who is mostly silent. His mother was killed by the Red
Death. While he was on a supply run, he returned to find his brother gone. On the supply run, he found
only a sweet treat, his namesake, as his drill sergeant thought he was "so sweet". He sacrificed himself to
save the others of his group by detonating a bomb rigged to detonate on high concentrations of carbon
dioxide in close proximity to Grace, a Silencer targeting the group.

Megan - a seven-year-old girl rescued and taken to Camp Haven. She meets and befriends Sammy on
the bus they ride. Megan is, along with many other kids her age that are part of the Fifth Wave, rigged
with a carbon dioxide-bomb. She is dropped off near Cassie's group's hideout. Evan and Cassie manage
to get the bomb out of her, for which they plan to use to attack the others, though Poundcake ends up
detonating it to save the others from Grace.

Flintstone "Flint" - a boy around Ben and Cassie's age. He is the former leader of Squad 53, until his
drill sergeant, Reznik, replaced him with Zombie. He accidentally kills himself after he messes with the
piece of equipment Zombie and Ringer found on Reznik. He was a skeptic of the conspiracy they told of.

Tank - a young boy in Squad 53. He goes "Dorothy" (crazy) and is replaced by Ringer. Zombie and
Dumbo discover him dead in the P&D Hangar (Processing and Disposal).

Kenny "Oompa" - an eight-or-nine-year-old boy on Squad 53. He is killed by grenade shrapnel on the
squad's first patrol.

Razor - a recruit at the base where Ringer was captured. He helped her escape, though Ringer finds out
he was secretly working with Vosch. After a fight with Vosch injuring Ringer, Razor is assigned to watch
her a hospital littered with dead bodies. Razor clears these out. He and Ringer attempt to reconcile and
do so easily. They in turn sleep together. When they return to the base, he shoots Teacup so that Vosch
will have no leverage over Ringer. He in turn is shot and killed himself.

Film adaptation
In March 2012, Columbia Pictures picked up the film rights to the trilogy, with Graham King and Tobey
Maguire attached as producers.[3][4] A film adaptation of the first novel in the series was released on
January 22, 2016. It was directed by J Blakeson, with a screenplay by Susannah Grant, Akiva Goldsman,
and Jeff Pinkner. While the film was a moderate box office success, it was derided by critics and
audiences, and prospects of adapting the rest of the series remain low.

P. Putnam's Sons. The novel is the first in The 5th Wave trilogy,
followed by The Infinite Sea and the final book being The Last Star.
The story follows 16-year-old Cassie Sullivan as she tries to survive
in a world devastated by the waves of alien invasions that have
decimated the Earth's population.

Critics have compared the book favorably to The Hunger Games and
The Road,[1] and noted that it "should do for aliens what Twilight
did for vampires."[2] Sony Pictures released a film adaptation in

crooked teeth. After Zombie sets off an explosion, Oompa is impaled with shrapnel and dies after an
unsuccessful attempt to save him.

Waves
First Wave: Lights Out: During the first wave, the Others release an EMP wave that takes out all
electronic technology and kills half a million people by shorting out all moving vehicles, including planes
in mid-flight.
Second wave: Surf's Up: The Others, realizing that roughly 40 percent of Earth's population lives
within 60 miles of the coastline, drop enormous rods "twice as tall as the Empire State Building and
three times as heavy" onto the Earth's fault lines, causing massive tsunamis that wipe out three billion
people.

Third wave: Pestilence: The Others launch a scheme to infect as many remaining survivors as possible
with a deadly virus. Using the Earth's birds as carriers (via falling excrement), the plague claims 97% of
remaining survivors. The virus, which resembles an advanced form of Ebola, causes victims to slowly
bleed to death until eventually "you've become a viral bomb. And when you explode, you blast everyone
around you with the virus".

Fourth wave: Silencers: After the 3rd wave, the remaining human population tries desperately to
survive off whatever resources remain by looting, all the while clinging to the hope that "the people in
charge", wherever they may be, are working toward a solution. Eventually, this belief seems legitimate
when an impressive battalion of soldiers (with functioning vehicles) arrives at the makeshift camp where
Cassie, Sam, and her father are staying. The soldiers and commander, however, only appear interested in
the children and promptly load them onto waiting buses before ordering all the adults into the camp
barracks. Once the humans are surrounded, Commander Vosch orders a massacre and kills everyone at
the camp. Cassie, however, narrowly escapes and witnesses her father's death by Vosch's hand. At this
moment, the 4th wave becomes clear: not all "humans" are actually humans.

Fifth wave: The Fifth wave is referenced in "The Last Star".

Reception
Critical reception of the book has been positive. It received starred reviews from both Publishers Weekly
and Kirkus,[3][4] and reviewers have noted that it has broad audience appeal, blurring the lines between
young adult and adult fiction, and between genre and mainstream fiction, so that it cannot be easily
wedged into one genre despite having many of the characteristics of young adult fiction.[1][5] The New
York Times listed it as one of the best young adult books of 2013,[6] and it was a Goodreads finalist for
Best Young Adult Fantasy or Science Fiction novel in 2013.[7]

Sequels
The 5th Wave is the first book in a trilogy. The second book in the series, The Infinite Sea, was released
on September 16, 2014.[8] The third book in the series, The Last Star, was released on May 24, 2016.[9]

Film adaptation
A film adaption with the same name was released by Columbia Pictures on January 22, 2016. It was
directed by J Blakeson, with a screenplay by Susannah Grant, Akiva Goldsman, and Jeff Pinkner.

The Infinite Sea
The Infinite Sea is a young adult science fiction novel written by
American author Rick Yancey. It was published on September 16, The Infinite Sea
2014, by G. P. Putnam's Sons. The novel is the second in The 5th
Wave trilogy, preceded by The 5th Wave and followed by The Last
Star. After fleeing from a camp established by aliens, 16-year-old
Cassie Sullivan, her brother and a squad of child soldiers attempt to
prevent the extermination of the human race.

The novel provides detailed histories of the secondary characters

from the previous novel.[1] Instead of just narration from Cassie, the
narration shifts from the point of view of another teenage girl called
Ringer.[2]

Plot
A few days after the events of the first novel, Cassie, Ben, and the
rest of squad 53 have taken refuge at a hotel, which they call "Walker
Hotel" in honor of Evan Walker, who is thought to be dead after
destroying Camp Haven. Ringer, believing that their refuge in the
hotel will not last, goes out searching for a cave system mentioned Author Rick Yancey

her throat. With a struggle, Cassie manages to safely remove the bomb and she contains it in a plastic
baggie. Ben and Poundcake have been collecting CO2 canisters so that the bomb can be detonated at a
safe distance away.

Grace appears as Cassie and Evan finish the operation. She forcefully kisses Evan in front of Cassie. The
squad arrives and chaos ensues: Poundcake is shot, and the helicopter flies in during the struggle, and
Grace appears to destroy the helicopter and kill the pilot. While this is happening, Evan tells Cassie of a
pod sent down from the mothership to extract Grace that will be her temporary home. He shows her how
to find it and shows her the bomb they removed from Megan's throat. Sammy takes the bomb as he
rushes by on his way out. Evan makes Cassie promise "to end it" and insists that he be left behind. As she
knows she has no other choice, Cassie kisses him and leaves.

A short distance from the hotel Sammy turns and starts running back, Cassie catches him and Sammy
says that he dropped the bomb. Unable to carry him, the group leaves a mortally wounded Poundcake
and continues to move away from the hotel. Poundcake crawls back to the hotel, finds the lost explosive
device, and blows it up an arm's length away from Grace, demolishing the hotel and killing both of them.
Cassie thinks Evan had died in the explosion.

Ringer is taken to another "training" camp, much like Camp Haven, with Colonel Vosch having taken
over command of the camp. Ringer semi-befriends a recruit named Razor, who knows of the conspiracy
and that the officials at camp are actually The Others. Ringer asks Vosch about the whereabouts of
Teacup and Vosch tells her that she is alive. Vosch, Razor, and a woman named Claire enhance her with
the 12th system (neural chip and nanobots), a piece of Other technology designed to strengthen human
anatomy.

Ringer and Razor conspire to escape. The plan is carried out successfully, Ringer kills Claire and disables
Jumbo, knocks out Teacup, and forces a pilot to fly them in a helicopter. Before it crashes, the pilot,
Razor, and Teacup bailout. Ringer jumps without a parachute and lands in an ice-covered lake. After
meeting at the crash site, Ringer soon discovers that Razor was secretly working with Vosch. She had
sensed something through the 12th system when she kissed him prior to the jump from the helicopter.
She knocks him out and heads to the warehouse, which had been converted to a hospital at the time of
the 3rd Wave. She finds Vosch in it, who openly invites her to a fight. Vosch wins easily and reveals that
Silencers are not actually "Others". They are just humans enhanced by the 12th system neural chip that
contains a constructing program to make them believe they are "Others", never controlled or linked to
the "Others". It is unclear if Vosch is human. Razor is charged with guarding and helping to heal her;
eventually, they reconcile.

When they return to base, Vosch questions Ringer about what the "solution" is. She states that the
"Others" don't mean to exterminate all humans. Vosch states that the "Others" could have simply
eliminated all humans by dropping a big rock on them and hints there is a specific goal to be gained
through the wave attacks. Vosch tells Ringer he has enhanced her to hunt down and kill Walker, and that
he needs someone like her because the destroyed drones were meant to track the enhanced humans, not
normal humans. Razor whispers to Ringer about the leverage Vosch has on her because of Teacup and
proceeds to shoot and kill Teacup. In return, Razor is shot and dies. The chaos gives Ringer a chance to
escape by diving out a window.

In the end, Cassie and squad 53 are recovering from the explosion. From the woods, Evan emerges and
Cassie goes to meet him.

how cruel the Other's takeover has been, and the fact that Sam is
forgetting his life before the invasion started, losing his traits of
humanity. Later, she is furious with Zombie when he announces that he and Dumbo are going to the
caverns to find Teacup and Ringer (they don't know about Ringer's transformation, nor that Teacup is
already dead), so he can warn them about the upcoming final Wave.

While in the woods, an attack ends with Dumbo shot in the back. Zombie stuffs rags into Dumbo's
wound, hides him in a building in Urbana, and goes for help. Later Zombie finds an old cat lady who
reminds him of his grandmother. She offers him some soup, then reveals that the secret ingredient is cat,
then she tries to strangle Zombie. He has no choice but to shoot her dead.

Ringer and Constance land near the caverns. Constance disappears and Ringer battles the Silencer
priest, whose 12 System power is faster and stronger. At that point, Zombie also arrives at the caves, still
looking for Ringer and Teacup. He falls into a large pit full of dead bodies and starts to sink, when
Constance pulls him out and shoots the priest dead.

Zombie, Ringer and Constance head into Urbana to reunite with Dumbo. Zombie is suspicious of
Constance but Ringer vouches for her, knowing that if she doesn't Constance will kill her friends. They
return to Dumbo's hiding place, but Ringer notes that he has lost too much blood. Dumbo dies, and
Zombie marks his grave with colored flags.

The three of them return to the safe house where Evan, Cassie, Nugget and Megan (a young child they
previously rescued) are waiting. When the trio arrive, Constance grabs Nugget and puts a gun to his
head, demanding that Evan be given to her so she can bring him back to Vosch. Nugget, using a gun
hidden in his pants, shoots Constance. Her enhancements help her survive, so Ringer and Nugget shoot
her repeatedly to finish her off. Ringer tells them that Vosch will see that Constance's implant is offline
and send a helicopter and a squad of 5th Wave troops to capture Evan and kill everyone else. Evan
volunteers to return to Vosch in order to save everyone else.

As the chopper approaches, everyone hides in the basement of the safe house. Ringer and Evan kill many
of the attacking soldiers, revealed to be Ringer's original squad before she was transferred to Squad 53.
Evan is captured and taken away in the helicopter. Ringer devises a plan for those in the safe house to
attack the soldiers that will come to bring back the survivors from the first chopper. During this planning
and waiting, Ringer tells Zombie that she is pregnant with Razor's baby - a 5th Wave soldier who helped
Ringer escape from Vosch at the end of the previous book. When the next chopper arrives, they kill all
the soldiers, capture the helicopter pilot, Major Bob, and leave a wounded Zombie behind to take Nugget
and Megan to the caves. Ringer forces Major Bob to fly them to Vosch's base.

Evan has already arrived at the base, where Vosch finally explains the aliens' actions. They manipulate,
commit genocide, and suppress the development of other sentient species to further their own radical
deep ecological goals. He tells Evan that there are only 12 true Others on Earth like Vosch that know the
entirety of their plans: the Others have gone to many planets and attacked dominant species in order to
save the lives of all other species before the dominant ones can destroy themselves and their planet's
ecosystems. He says that the next day, the mothership will bomb every city on Earth to destroy all
footprints of mankind. This will remove all traces of art, music, knowledge, and civilization. As a result,
the remainder of humanity will fight amongst themselves, without ever having access to their past
knowledge. Humans will never be able to rise to civilization again and forever stay in the stone age, thus
keeping the balance of life on earth. When this Final Wave succeeds, Vosch's reward will be a launch in
an escape pod to the mothership to become an immortal consciousness.

Vosch knows that his 12th System creation, Ringer, will come back to kill him, so he must have her
killed. He examines Evan and discovers that the glitch in the 12th System is love – in Evan's case, he fell
in love with Cassie. He has Evan reprogrammed to have all of his humanity erased from his mind,
leaving him as an emotionless killing machine. He knows Ringer will come and plans to have Evan kill
her.

At the caves, a helicopter searches for the escapees from the safe house. Zombie, Nugget, and Megan are
soon in a heated battle with the attacking squad. Zombie is helping Megan and Nugget escape when he is
suddenly shot in the back of the head and everything goes white.

Ringer and Cassie begin their infiltration of the base. Upon landing, Cassie (now dressed in a soldier
uniform) runs one way as Ringer runs another. Ringer detonates a bomb and in the confusion Cassie is
able to hide among the troops. Cassie and Ringer plan to make it to the command center from opposite
directions, with Ringer setting off additional bombs to cause chaos. Cassie continuously hears an alarm
warning that General Order Four will commence in five minutes and all forces are to head to designated
safe areas. Cassie makes it to the door where she is to wait for Ringer, when General Order Four
activates. All the lights in the base go dark, the sprinkler system goes off, starting to flood the room, and
her skin begins to burn – a small version of the first three waves (blackouts, floods, pestilence) the
Others used when they attacked Earth. She shoots out a window and leaps outside, rolling in the dirt to
try and get the poison off her skin.

At the Urbana caves, Zombie comes to. A female Sergeant shows him a picture of Ringer and asks where
she is. He plays dumb until she places a gun to Nugget's head, then he admits that Ringer went to the
base to kill Vosch. Her troops want to kill Nugget, Zombie and Megan, but the Sergeant says their orders
were to capture them, so they load them on the helicopter and head back to the base.

When Ringer spots Cassie rolling on the ground, she jumps 40 feet across a roof and then jumps three
stories down to help Cassie. Ringer removes all of Cassie's clothes and swaps outfits with her, knowing
that her 12th System enhancements will protect her from the poison. The pair descend into the base in
search of Evan and Vosch. They enter the computer core and try to find Evan's data, so they can find out
where he is. Since all the people's data/memories are labeled by number, Cassie decides to download all
10,000 people's worth of memories into her mind. Ringer hears movement in the hallway and leaves
Cassie strapped into the download chair. Meanwhile, Cassie now knows everything about Ringer, Evan,
Zombie, Nugget, and every other human loaded in the database. She also learns all of the access codes
and the layout of the base.

Ringer finds Evan in the hall, and they fight. Because Evan is now purely 12th System, he is much faster,
stronger, and more ruthless than Ringer. She shoots him repeatedly, to little effect. When Evan breaks
her back, she knows the 12th System won't repair her quickly enough, so Ringer screams to Cassie to
run. When Evan enters the room, he only finds bits of Cassie's hair and blood in the chair, as she has
torn herself out. As he uses his super hearing to find her, entering a flooded room, where Cassie drops a
live electrical wire into the water, electrocuting him.

Vosch finds Ringer, still paralyzed. He explains that he thinks of himself as Ringer's creator/father, and
wants to take her with him to the mothership. She turns him down, distracting him until Cassie appears
and shoots him in the head. Cassie emotionlessly tells Ringer that she killed Evan, and Ringer consoles
her, stating that he was already gone, having been turned into a shell of a person without humanity.

Cassie, with her downloaded knowledge, uses a keypad to open a secret door to Vosch's escape pod.
Cassie leaves in the pod and Ringer searches her pockets for the explosive pill Vosch gave, so she can
wipe out the base. She remembers that she switched outfits with Cassie, so Ringer drags herself to
Vosch's body and searches his pockets for the kill-switch that will kill all 5,000 soldiers at the base who
have tracker implants.
Zombie, Nugget and Megan are in the helicopter, which has been circling the base waiting for General
Order Four to be turned off. The pilot and soldiers suddenly stiffen and die. Zombie realizes Ringer or
Cassie must still be alive and activated the kill-switch. The trio survive the helicopter crashing by
jumping into a river. As they head to the base, they see a green light launch and head towards the
mothership.

Cassie realizes she has no fear as she is no longer alone, with the memories and emotions of 10,000
people in her mind. She finds the explosive pill in her pocket and recognizes it from one Megan had,
which is activated by the carbon dioxide in a person's exhaled breath. The escape pod docks on the giant
mothership, the size of Manhattan, and sees that it is filled with the high explosives that are to be
dropped on Earth's cities. She recites her and Sammy's nighttime prayers one last time, bites down on
the pill, and breathes.

Zombie witnesses a large explosion from the mothership and it then disappears. He finds Ringer
paralyzed in the hallway and realizes that Cassie has sacrificed herself to destroy the Others and their
ship.

Several months later, Zombie and Nugget are in a toy store in Texas. They come across a soldier with one
hand in his shirt holding a wound—similar to a scenario Cassie experienced in the first book. Nugget
wants to kill the soldier and Zombie tells him that they don't do that anymore. Zombie tries to reason
with the soldier, but the soldier pulls a gun and shoots himself in the head. Zombie and Nugget return to
a house where Ringer is nursing her newborn baby girl she named Cassie. Outside, Evan Walker is
patrolling – the 12th System saved him from the electrocution, and his human friends have re-
downloaded his memories, returning his humanity. Evan tells Zombie that he plans to go to as many 5th
Wave military bases as he can and destroy them, calculating that for every life he takes, two will be
saved. As Evan leaves, Nugget watches from the house. He asks Zombie about the constellation that was
his sister's namesake, and Zombie points out that three of the stars are a throne that the constellation
Cassiopeia sits on, from which Cassie now sits to watch over the realm.

Yancey also spent 10 years of his life in Knoxville, Tennessee, where two of his books are set.[2]

Career
While working at the IRS, Yancey wrote screenplays in his spare time. At the suggestion of his wife and
collaborator, one of his screenplays became his first professionally published book, A Burning in
Homeland (Simon and Schuster), published in 2001.

With the success of A Burning in Homeland, Yancey resigned from the IRS in 2004 to concentrate on
writing full-time. His memoir, Confessions of a Tax Collector (HarperCollins, 2004), chronicles his days
working at the IRS.

After the release of his memoir, Yancey began work on two series of books—one for adults, and one for
children.

The Alfred Kropp series tells the story of an awkward teenager who saves the world when he comes into
possession of King Arthur's famed sword, Excalibur—pursued by the secret cabal of knights who have
hidden it for centuries. Published by Bloomsbury Children’s Publishing in the U.S. and the U.K., and in
fifteen foreign language editions, the series comprised three books: The Extraordinary Adventures of
Alfred Kropp (2005), The Seal of Solomon (2007), and The Thirteenth Skull (2008).

His Highly Effective Detective books (St. Martin’s Press) are whodunits for adult readers, featuring a
charming but barely competent private investigator based in Tennessee. That series consists of four
titles: The Highly Effective Detective (2006), The Highly Effective Detective Goes to the Dogs (2008),
The Highly Effective Detective Plays the Fool (2010), and The Highly Effective Detective Crosses the
Line (2011).

By 2010, Yancey had completed the first book in The Monstrumologist series. The tetralogy tells the tale
of a 19th-century doctor and his young apprentice, who race around the world chasing—and being
chased by—monsters. This highly acclaimed series, published by Simon and Schuster Children’s Books
in the U.S. and the U.K, and in eight foreign language editions, comprised four books: The
Monstrumologist (2009), The Curse of the Wendigo (2010), The Isle of Blood (2011), and The Final
Descent (2013).
