CHAPTER II
PRESENT TIME

LEARNING OUTCOME

After learning the material and finishing the exercises, you are expected to be
able to use the patterns learnt in making sentences.

SCORING CRITERIA

Your ability in mastering this chapter can be measured with the following scoring
criterias:
1. Tell about habitual action.
2. Tell about something in progress.
3. Use the patterns learnt to make some sentences correctly.

INTRODUCTION

The simple present tense expresses a general truth or a customary action. It is also
used to talk about things that are planned for the future. Present progressive tense is
used to talk about actions in present, or things that are still going on or happening now,
while the speaker is speaking. The Simple Present uses do and does as helping verbs in
questions and negatives. The Present Progressive uses am, is and are in questions and
negatives.

FOCUS
Seaton and Y.H. Mew (2007:80) states that the simple present tense truth or
customary action and also used to talk about things that are planned for the future
while the present progressive tense talks about actions in the present, or things that
are still going on or happening now. The examples of the simple present tense and
the present progressive tense can be from the following examples.
A. The simple present tense
1. Mary enjoys singing.
2. Peter sometimes lends me his bike.
3. Monkey likes banana.
4. Tom collects stamps.
5. The earth goes around the sun.
6. It often snows in winter.
7. We always wash our hands before meals.
8. We eat three meals a day.
9. Grandad retires next year.
10. The plan lands at 5.30 pm.

Azar (1992:8) states some frequency adverbs used in the simple present
tense
Always
Usually
Often
Sometimes
Seldom
Rarely
Never

Final s is added to most verbs.


a. Visit = visits
b. Speak = speaks
c. Hope = hopes
Final –es is added if the verbs ended in – ch, -sh, -s, -x, or -z
a. Catch = catches
b. Wash = washes
c. Pass = passes
Final –es is added to “do” and “go”.
a. Do = does
b. Go = goes
If a verb ends in a consonant + -y, change the –y into –I and add –es. If a
verb ends in fowel + - y, simply add –s.
a. Study = studies
b. Try = tries
c. Pay = pays
d. Buy = buys

B. The presnt progressive tense


1. The man is counting the monkey.
2. They are practicing tai chi.
3. We are rushing to the airport to meet Mr. Smith.
4. What is happening?
5. What are they doing?
6. Why aren’t you doing your homework?
7. They are still sleeping.
8. He is taking a walk in the park.
Nonprogressive verbs
According to Azar (1992:9) some words are not used in progressive tense. They
are:

Example: I hear a bird right now.
Not: I am hearing a bird right now.

Sometimes think and have used in progressive tense


1. I think grammar is easy. (Think means believe. It is nonprofressive)
I am thinking about grammar right now. (When think expresses thoughts that
are going through a person’s mind, it can be progressive).
2. Tom has a car. (when have expresses possession, it is not used in the present
progressive).
I am having a good time. (in certain idiomatic expression, have can be used in
the present progressive.

CONCLUSION

1. Use the simple present tense to talk about truth or customary action and things
that are planned for the future
2. Use the present progressive tense to talk about something in progress.
