Laser Safety Precautions

Laser Safety Precautions

Virtek laser projectors have less than 5 mW maximum laser output and meet the following certifications:
• Class 3R Laser Product complies with 21 CFR 1040.10 and 1040.11 except for deviations pursuant to Laser Notice
No. 50, dated June 24, 2007 for CDRH certification in North America
Note: Model LPS-7G compliant to IEC/EN 60825-1:1993 +A1:1997 +A2:2001, Class 2M

• Class 3R Laser Product meeting the IEC 60825-1, 2nd Edition:2007 standard for CE certification in Europe

Observe the following precautions to ensure your personal safety and to prevent damage to either the projector or
equipment connected to it.
WARNING: Failure to observe these precautions may result in improper operation of the unit and/or personal
injury.

WARNING: Use of controls or adjustments or performance of procedures other than those specified herein may
result in hazardous radiation exposure.

WARNING: Do not stare into beam or view directly with optical instruments.

Projector Beam Characteristics 1E/1EA

• Maximum output 4.5mW CW while scanning
• Focusing distance: 1463mm (4.8ft)
• Beam diameter at exit of projector: 4.45 mm
• Beam Divergence at exit of projector: 2.85 mrad
• Beam diameter at focusing distance: 0.28 mm

Power Source
The projector operates from a power source that will not apply more than 240 VRMS between the supply conductors
or between supply conductor and ground. Main supply fluctuations must not exceed +/-10%. A protective ground
connection, through the grounding conductor of the power cord, is essential for safe system operation.
You can press the power switch located on the end plate of the projector to stop projecting and power off the projector.

Safety, Hardware Specifications and Routine Maintenance

Grounding the projector

The projector is grounded through the power cord. To avoid electric shock, plug the power cord into a properly wired
receptacle with an earth ground connection. Do this before making connections to the input or output connectors.

Use the proper fuse

To avoid fire hazard, use only a fuse that meets all type, voltage, and current specifications. For more information about
these specifications, see Laser Projector Specifications on page 15.

Avoid direct eye exposure to laser beam

Laser light may be projecting any time the power indicator light is ON. Caution should be used to avoid direct eye
exposure to the laser beam.
Note: IEC Standard 60825-1: 2007 Annex C states:
"Class 3R: Dazzle, flash-blindness and afterimages may be caused by a beam from a Class 3R laser product in the
visible wavelength range, particularly under low ambient light conditions. This may have indirect general safety
implications resulting from temporary disturbance of vision or from startle reactions. Such visual disturbances
could be of particular concern if experienced while performing safety-critical operations such as working with
machines or at height, with high voltages or driving.”

Do not remove the projector cover

To avoid personal injury, do not operate a projector without its panels or cover. Removal of the projector cover or making
adjustments by untrained personnel can result in electrical shock or hazardous laser light exposure. Use of controls,
adjustments or performing procedures other than those described in this document may result in hazardous laser light
exposure.
Caution: NO USER-SERVICEABLE PARTS INSIDE. REFER SERVICING TO QUALIFIED SERVICE
PERSONNEL.

On all laser projector models insertion of reflective probes between the laser source and the collimator may result in
exposure to the following:
• laser power levels as high as 20 mW with 532nm wavelength for Green lasers
• laser power levels as high as 10 mW and a range in wavelength of 625nm to 640nm for Red lasers

Note: This potential hazard can only occur if the cover is removed and the interlock defeated.

Do not operate in explosive atmospheres

The projector provides no protection from static discharges or arcing components. Do not operate the projector in an
atmosphere of explosive gases.

This is the operating power input connector. For all projectors it connects to 115 - 240 V 50/60 Hz.

Data Cables
RJ 45- network connection to PC or HUB via Ethernet cable (CAT6 or equivalent, TIA/EIA-568B rated)
This connection carries the signals that provide the necessary timing and data for the projectors. It is a standard Ethernet
port connection. It can be used when the projector has a single board computer installed, which is a model dependant
option.
DB-25 plug to PC via double-shielded cable
This connection carries the signals that provide the necessary timing and data for the projectors. It is a standard printer
LPT port connection.
DB-25 socket to next projector via double-shielded cable
This connection carries the signals that provide the necessary timing and data to the next projector. They are identical
to the signals coming from the computer (PC).
The following signals are present on both DB-25 connectors:

PIN # SIGNAL NAME DESCRIPTION DIRECTION

1 nSTROBE Control Input
2-9 DATA-07 Data bits 0-7 Input

Maintenance Procedures

Maintenance Procedures
This section describes projector maintenance. Perform the following procedures to keep the projectors and their
accompanying parts in the best working order.

Cleaning the Projector Window

The glass used on the projector has special coating that must be treated with care to extend its usable lifetime.
Routinely inspect the optical glass in the sealed window of projector for any visible signs of dust or debris.
Warning: Improper cleaning practices can damage the surface coating. Use only lens cleaning solution or
Isopropyl alcohol in water as a cleaner. Any other chemical may damage the coating on the glass. Use lint-free
lens tissue, lint-free cotton swabs and powder-free gloves when touching the glass. Avoid getting fingerprints
on the lens and remove any fingerprints as soon as possible to avoid permanently damaging the coating.

1. Turn off the power to the system.

2. Stand on a ladder to reach the projector window.
3. Blow any large particles off the glass using pressurized gas.
4. Use a lint free lens cleaning cloth to clean the glass surface.
5. Use the drag method of cleaning to remove fingerprints or other difficult spots.
a) Apply lens cleaning solution or isopropyl alcohol in water solution and slowly drag the cloth across the surface
in the same direction.
If done correctly, the solvent will evaporate uniformly without leaving streaks or spots.

Safety, Hardware Specifications and Routine Maintenance

Cleaning the Cooling Channels

LPS-7 models
The LPS-7 has two cooling channels and fans to inspect. At least once a month, visually inspect the channels and fans
for dust or debris that may affect the volume of air passing through the cooling channel.
Warning: Failure to clean the cooling channel frequently may cause overheating and damage the electronic
devices inside of the projector, resulting in projector failure. It is important that the channels be cleaned routinely.

All Models

1. Turn OFF the power to the system.

2. If necessary, stand on a ladder to reach the projector.
3. From the end with the power and communication connections, blow dust out of the chamber, using compressed air
4. Ensure air source is free of oil and moisture.
5. When you have completed the maintenance, restore power to the system.

Cleaning the Mirrors on LPS-1E 1EA Models

Clean the mirrors only when advised by Virtek personnel.
Note: Improper cleaning practices can damage the surface coating. Use only lens cleaning solution or Isopropyl
alcohol in water as a cleaner. Any other chemical may damage the coating on the mirror. Use lint-free lens tissue,
lint-free cotton swabs and powder-free gloves when touching the mirrors. Avoid getting fingerprints on the mirrors.

1. Turn off the power to the system

2. Stand on a ladder to reach the projector window
3. Blow any large particles off the mirrors using a compressed air duster.
Note: Only use compressed air dusters intended for consumer electronics, as higher pressures may cause
damage to the mirrors and galvanometers

4. Use a lint free lens cleaning cloth to lightly clean the mirror surface.
