The tourist industry has become one of the most important economic influences of
modern times. Tourism has been one of the fastest growing industries inrecent years.

In spite of this rapid growth, it is not easy to deline tourism, and accurate statistics
are not easy to obtain. Tourism necessarily involves travel; a tourist is usually defined as a
person who is visiting some place other than his usual residence for more than 24 hours.

The question of purpose, however, also must enter into the definition of tourism.
Many people travel entirely for the purpose of recreation or pleasure, they are people on
holiday. Other people travel for reasons of health. Other people travel to visit friends or
relatives, a reason that has become more important because of increased mobility
throughout the world. All of these people are generally considered tourists since the
primary reason for their trips is recreation.

Tourism is a relatively new phenomenon in the world. Since being away from home
is a necessary component of tourism, its development as a mass industry depended on
modern means of rapid and inexpensive transportation. Tourism as we know it today
began with the building of the railroads in the 19th century, in fact, the words tourism and
tourist themselves were not used for the first time until about 1800.

La industria turística se ha convertido en una de las influencias económicas más

importantes de los tiempos modernos. El turismo ha sido una de las industrias de más
rápido crecimiento en los últimos años.

A pesar de este rápido crecimiento, no es fácil delimitar el turismo y no es fácil

obtener estadísticas precisas. El turismo implica necesariamente viajar, un turista se suele
definir como una persona que está visitando algún lugar distinto a su residencia habitual
durante más de 24 horas.

Sin embargo, la cuestión del propósito también debe entrar en la definición de

turismo. Muchas personas viajan íntegramente con fines recreativos o de placer, son
personas de vacaciones. Otras personas viajan por motivos de salud. Otras personas
viajan para visitar a amigos o familiares, razón que se ha vuelto más importante debido al
aumento de la movilidad en todo el mundo. Todas estas personas son generalmente
consideradas turistas, ya que el motivo principal de sus viajes es la recreación.

El turismo es un fenómeno relativamente nuevo en el mundo. Dado que estar fuera

de casa es un componente necesario del turismo, su desarrollo como industria de masas
dependió de medios modernos de transporte rápido y económico. El turismo tal como lo
conocemos hoy en día comenzó con la construcción de los ferrocarriles en el siglo XIX, de
hecho, las palabras turismo y turista no se utilizaron por primera vez hasta
aproximadamente 1800.
