Types of Lettering
• Single stroke
• Double stroke
• BIS (SP46:2003) - Gives dimensions for lettering & types
• Type A - Height of capital letter is divided into 14 parts
• Type B - Height of capital letter is divided into 10 parts
• Both types can be Vertical or Inclined at 75˚ to the horizontal
• Line width of Type A ˂ Type B

Height and width of letters
• BIS (SP46: 2003) has recommended the heights of letters as:
• 1.8, 2.5, 3.5, 5, 7, 10, 14 & 20 mm
• The height-to-width ratio for letters varies between 7 : 5 or 7 : 6
• Total height of lowercase letters equals that of capital letters

Dimensioning
• Every drawing, besides showing the true shape of an object, must supply its
exact length, breadth, height, sizes and positions of holes, grooves etc. and
such other details relating to the manufacture of that object.
• Providing this information on a drawing is called dimensioning.
• Lines, figures, numerals, symbols, notes etc. are used for this purpose
• Types of dimensions
• size or functional dimensions (length, breadth,
height, depth, diameter)
• location or datum dimensions (locations or
exact positions of various constructional
details within the object)
12
Elements of Dimensioning
13
Placing of dimensions
• Aligned system
• Unidirectional system
14
Dimensioning rules
• Complete dimensioning
• No repetition
• Place on the view where its use is shown more clearly
• Place outside the views
• Avoid mutual crossing of dimension lines
• Avoid dimensioning between hidden lines
• Dimension lines should not cross any other line of the drawing
• An outline or a centre line should never be used as a dimension line
• A centre line may be extended to serve as an extension line
• Aligned system of dimensioning is recommended
15
Dimensioning hints
• Place dimension lines at least 8 mm
away from the outlines and from
each other
• Dimensions in a series
• Continuous or chain dimensioning
• Progressive or parallel dimensioning
• Place smaller dimensions nearer to
the view
• When a number of parallel
dimension lines are to be shown
near each other, the dimensions
should be staggered
• Cylinders and holes
