The provision which deals with ‘written statement’ is Order VIII of CPC,1908.

Written
Statement has not been defined in Code of Civil Procedure,1908. It is a word with special
significance that typically means a response to the query brought by the complaint. In other words,
it is the defendant's plea in which he deals with the material evidence claimed in his accusation by
the complainant and either mentions some additional facts in his favour or poses legal challenges to
the complaint's claim.
