SECTION 1: ACOUSTIC EMISSION TESTING (AE)
MISTRAS Group has taken the VPAC™ through valve loss control instrument to the next
level. The VPAC™II IS significantly simplifies asset maintenance and increases operation
safety. Created for use in hazardous environments such as oil, gas and petrochemical
plants, power generating plants and offshore platforms, the VPAC™II IS is a dedicated
intrinsically safe acoustic leak instrument for through valve loss control. Using the same
technology and sensors as our successful VPAC™, the VPAC™II IS, for example, can
determine the loss of hydrocarbons to flare in hazardous areas and save millions of
dollars for the plants.
Starting with basic process information and type of valve, along with the measured
Average Signal Level (ASL) from the instrument, VPAC™II IS uses a proprietary
algorithm to identify through-valve gas losses and estimates leak rate.
The user interface is simple and intuitive. The instrument is powered by a high capacity
rechargeable battery lasting several weeks with typical use. The battery replacement on
this handheld power device is quick and easy, and the unit retains all settings even
when powered off, so downtime is minimal

SECTION 1: ACOUSTIC EMISSION TESTING (AE)
The 1278 Subsystem, configured for valve leak detection, provides an on-line alterna-
tive to the portable 5131-VPAC, which is used worldwide for loss control in refineries,
gas plants and offshore platforms. The 5131-VPAC saves >$1m per annum per unit in
losses. Based on >15 years experience with VPAC technology, the most cost-effective
strategy for installing VPAC On-line is to target the Emergency Blow-Down Valves
(EBDV), hydrogen valves, and C2/C3 control valves leading to flare that are responsible
for the majority of losses.
ESDV’s may be monitored automatically when closed. Difficult to reach valves, for
example those on top of towers that may never be surveyed, are another ideal use. The
system works with any loop-powered 24 volt 4-20 ma system, (power is derived from
the current loop), and is supplied with an intrinsically safe VPAC sensor, ready for direct
connection to the plant DCS via any galvanic or zener barrier. When valves do not close
properly, or leak for other reasons, the operator knows immediately.

PowerPAC
Acoustic Emission Testing Technology Package
Stock Code: Detecto-NCD0110
PowerPAC™ is an Acoustic Emission (AE) technology package for testing power trans-
formers. An on-line monitoring procedure was developed under an EPRI (Electric Power
Research Institute) sponsored and tailored collaboration with Physical Acoustics Corp.
(Project I.D. No. 051481). This collaboration refined the package with three phases of
program development resulting in on-line monitoring of power transformers to detect,
locate and assess electrical and thermal faults.
AE sensors are installed on the transformer covering both the tank and the LTC
compartment (if one is present) along with sensors to monitor pump current,
fan current, load current, tank wall temperature and LTC compartment wall
temperature collecting data for comparison with the AE data during post test
data analysis.
In order to observe the effects of a complete load cycle, data is collected over a period
of 24 hours. Results are presented showing the location (in 3-D) and types of faults. A
grading system is used for each fault and provides an overall evaluation of the trans-
former for maintenance or operation planning.
Technical Specifications
DiSP-24: 24 Channel, Digital AE instrument which includes PAC R15I integral preamp sensors with built-in
self diagnostics capability (Auto Sensor Testing) and 30 meter cables. The system comes with a built-in high
performance PC controller, RW-CD, keyboard, mouse and video monitor and is shipped in a rugged transport
case. This system can be used from the smallest of transformers (typically around 13.8 kV) to the largest
GSU transformers (typically around 500 kV). Three current transducers (CT) and 2 resistance theorem
devices (RTD) needed for recording parametric signals are also included.
PowerPAC™: This is real time AE data acquisition and feature extraction software. It is used in real time test
as well as post analysis to remove unwanted data due to such extraneous noise sources as pump operation,
fan operation, wind and rain. This is accomplished with the AE-WIN- POST utility that is included with this
package. Other utilities include the TBFH software that is used to identify whether the AE source is due to
either an electrical or thermal fault.
This software also includes the 3-dimensional location software to provide real time test as well as post
analysis for three dimensional source location of faults detected in either the main tank or the LTC
compartment PowerPAC™
PowerPAC™ Database: A system created to facilitate the management of data generated by testing
power transformers with Acoustic Emission. The main components are: transformer nameplate and test data.
A design number can be assigned to a transformer of same characteristics. This allows comparing
acoustic activity obtained in identical transformers.

The primary use of Ir.192 sealed sources is in gamma radiography. In comparison to other
sealed sources used in similar applications, the film resolution produced with the use of Ir.192
provides exceptional quality which is of critical importance in the field of non-destructive
testing.
Sources manufactured by NTP Radioisotopes SOC Ltd are suitable for most types of Gamma
projectors. These Ir.192 capsules, made of stainless steel and containing high purity activated
iridium, are manufactured according to strict IAEA standards and each source is welded and
tested to comply with Special Form certification, also fully accredited by the IAEA in compli-
ance with the requirements of NTP's ISO 9001:2008 certification.
Irradiation of Iridium seeds takes place at various facilities around the world including the
Safari 1 Reactor situated at Pelindaba, South Africa. NTP Radioisotopes SOC Ltd assembles
Ir.192 Sealed Sources in Special Form capsules in their Hotcell facilities.

SITEX CP Series
ICM’s CPSERIES has been designed to revolutionize the handling and the performance of
portable x-ray sets.
Despite having halved the weight of similar portable X-ray generators available on the
market (with the same power output), the generators of the SITEX CPSERIES contain a
shutter, a laser pointer, a beryllium window, an aluminium filter and two integrated
diaphragms (customized sizes available on request).
Without compromising ICM’s robustness and reliability, the small size and light weight of
the SITEX CPSERIES will radically change the way that you perform your RT inspections,
impacting positively in terms of both quality and return on investment (ROI).

SECTION 4: RADIOGRAPHIC TESTING (RT)
In both systems, the X-ray generation is based on the “Bremsstrahlung” emission. Electrons are emitted from the cathode and accelerated
by the electrical field existing between the anode and the cathode. When they strike the anode, they are suddenly decelerated.
This induces the X-ray emission called “Bremsstrahlung”.
The main differences are the way to supply the X-ray tube and to emit electrons. In the case of pulsed sources, repetitive high voltage
pulses are applied to the tube. The very high flow of electrons is emitted from a pin by field effect. As the instantaneous current is very
high, the pin is progressively degraded.
During the lifetime of the generator, as the pin shape is modified, the dose rate is evolving.
The repeatability of the dose is limited during the lifetime. Moreover, the cumulated X-ray emission time is very limited: only few seconds
(each pulse is around 50 ns long). In this case the voltage applied on the tube is not selectable.
Specifications
Constant Potential Output: 120kV - 1 mA / 160 kV - 0.5mA
Over recent years, there have been major advances in imaging technology: CMOS silicon active pixel sensors, CCD capture devices and
high speed film-based systems (such as F8 + RCF screens). Combine these with the ultra lightweight, mains power-independent CP120B
and CP160B as the source of X-rays and the result is a totally new concept for NDT and SECURITY applications.
Greater penetrating power and almost incredibly low and compact size are achieved by the advanced 100 kHz resonant mode high
voltage transformer. This delivers a constant DC output that easily outperforms contemporary 150 kV and 200 kV cold cathode pulsed
X-ray generators.
Depending on the detector used, CP120B and CP160B will image through steel plates up to 10 mm and 21 mm thick with a very short
exposure time. The CP120B and CP160B can also be run continuously for several minutes without cooling interruptions, a major
improvement on the “few seconds” possible with pulsed, cold cathode X-ray units.

4.2.3 Portable Crawler X-Ray Units All SITEX and SITEXS units contain a rod anode. This is the focal spot that is outside the SF6-insulat-
ed high-voltage generator. As maximum advantages are derived from this ideal configuration, for
one and the same thickness, the volume of lead required for standard radiation protection is
Crawler Units considerably reduced.
Portable X-Ray Generator SITEX & STEXS
Consequently, the reduced weight that is achieved makes it possible for further investments to be
made in the quality and general improvement of the level of performance (robustness, cooling,
accessories etc).We can confirm that SITEX and SITEXS are among the lightest portable X-ray
generators available to the market.

Technical Specifications
Flexible array transducer for use on concave or convex radii
Rubber housing set to nominal geometry, limits the variation for protection against accidental damage
Waterproof encoder (33 steps/mm)
Frequency 1-10MHz
Number of elements 8, 16, 32, 64, 128
Element pitch 0.3-2mm
Minimum bend radius is dependent upon the frequency and size (e.g. 5MHz,1mm pitch achieves ±R15mm;
10MHz,0.3mm pitch achieves ±R3mm)
Features
Conforms to the shape of the component or inspection surface
Simple inspection setup as probe is always normal to the surface
No adjustment needed when scanning a changing radius
Cost effective for multiple geometries as a single transducer can be used in several housings
Compatible with standard phased array instruments
Flex Transducers
Flex transducers are thin, compliant ultrasonic probes that can conform to
curved surfaces using fingertip pressure. This enables them to be used on
non-flat components to provide improved ultrasound transmission compared
to standard hard faced transducers.
Made of a thin but durable piezo-electric material that is soft enough to bend,
Flex transducers can be shaped to suit curved geometry. By using a soft
backing layer, the flexibility of the crystal is retained.
The Flex series are available as single element (FFSC), dual element (FFTC),
composite single element (CFFSC), and composite dual element (CFFTC)
formats. Standard Flex transducers are 5MHz or 10MHz at sizes of Ø6mm,
Ø10mm or Ø20mm diameter.
Flex transducers are ideal for inspecting radius areas of composites and
accessing complex geometries in metals, such as weld cap areas or castings.
They can be used with any standard ultrasonic instrument.
