Grab a pencil, rubber and ruler and draw the outline of your future kitchen on a piece of paper.

Remember it’s best to do this to scale (i.e. 1cm = 1m). Add labels to your outline so you know which
spaces will be next to your kitchen. E.g. ‘deck’ or ‘dining room’ or ‘lounge room’. Knowing these
adjacencies will help you work out how best to layout your kitchen.

Before we move on, let’s recap on where we are.

By now you should have:

(#PROBP OR #NOBP?)
24 — THE RENO SCHOOL LOVE YOUR KITCHEN LAYOUT— 25

STEP 1

Once you’ve got the outline of your kitchen, it’s time to piece it all together to see what should go where.

1. Draw your main wall, (or your anchor.)

2. Now sketch in your island bench.
3. Is there space for any returns?
4. Try and find a place to put a window or door to act as that outdoor connector.
STEP 2+3
5. Now look back at your list of must-haves vs nice-to-haves and start penciling in all your
must-have items.
MODULE FOUR - PDF TWO

You might end up with a few different versions depending on how much space you have to work
with. One version might have your sink on the island bench, and another version might have your
sink looking out a window. This is fine. Experiment until you land on a layout that feels right.

How are your storage options looking? Have you found enough space to meet your needs? Can you
see where you might use drawers vs. cupboards? What about overhead cabinetry? Have you used
open shelving anywhere? Have you tried to squeeze in a butler’s pantry?

Don’t forget power points! You’ll need them for the fridge, oven, microwave, dishwasher, counter-top
appliances and the inevitable phone charger.

STEP 4+5

Tip: DON’T WORRY IF YOU END UP WITH LOTS OF DIFFERENT SKETCHES –

THIS IS JUST THE START OF THE PROCESS AND WE’LL CONTINUE TO
REFINE THIS FURTHER. FOR MANY OF YOU, THIS WILL JUST BE THE
BASIS OF A PLAN THAT YOU USE TO START DISCUSSIONS WITH YOUR
