TRANSALKYLATION OF TOLUENE PROCESS DESCRIPTION

2 molecules of Toluene are converted into 1 mole of benzene and 1 mole of mixed
xylene isomers. In the process, toluene and C9 aromatics are mixed with liquid recycle
and recycle hydrogen and is heated to 350oC to 530oC at 1 to 5 MPa and the mixture is
then charged to a reactor containing a fixed bed of noble metal with a hydrogen to
feedstock mole ratio of 5:1. Following removal of gases, the separator liquid is freed of
light ends and the bottoms are fractioned to produce benzene, xylene, fuel gas, and the
recycle C9 aromatics and toluene and high boilers.
