❖ Human Comfort
❖ Sustainable design in Architecture
❖ Sustainable Architecture Design Methods

• Passive design
• Nanotechnology

Human Comfort
❖ Human comfort inside buildings is one of the most important environmental
concerns which is always affected by the architectural design.
❖ It is a subjective matter and varies with individuals.
❖ It involves several environmental variables, including:
• effects of temperature;
• air movement and
• humidity.
Sustainable Design in Architecture
Architecture that seeks to:
❖ Minimize the negative environmental impact of buildings by
• efficiency and moderation in the use of materials, energy, and development space and the
ecosystem at large.
❖ The environmental impact of buildings is eroding the quality of life.
The built environment responsible for:
• 40 % of the energy consumption
• about 40 % of the CO2 emissions in the world, and
• about 40% of the landfill material as a result of construction waste.
❖ Sustainability has been defined in 1987 as: ”meeting the needs of the present generation, without
compromising with the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”.
❖ With the ongoing urbanization and growth of metropolitan regions around the world, issues of
sustainability are stalls, in terms of technical, economic, social and ecological aspects.
A Sustainable Design
❖ Sustainable design seeks to:
• reduce negative impacts on the environment,
• enhance health and comfort of building occupants, and
• improve building performance.
❖ The basic objectives of sustainability are to:
• reduce consumption of non-renewable resources,
• minimize waste, and
• create healthy, productive environments.
Sustainable Design is Important
❖ Sustainable design minimizes:
• initial environmental cost of building (by reducing material waste and
using sustainable products) and
• long-term environmental impact of buildings (by constructing efficient
buildings that use only a fraction of energy required to power and
heat
Passive design
Passive design is the key to sustainable building. It responds to local climate and site conditions to
maximize building users' comfort and health while minimizing energy use. It can also reduce
energy use and environmental impacts such as greenhouse gas emissions.
Passive design is design that takes advantage of the climate to maintain a comfortable temperature
range in the home. It reduces or eliminates the need for auxiliary heating or cooling, which
accounts for about 40 % .

Key Features of Passive Design

• Building location and orientation on the site;
• Building layout;
• Window design;
• Insulation (including window insulation);
• Thermal mass; shading; and
• Ventilation.

Each of these elements works with others to achieve comfortable temperatures and good
indoor air quality

Active design
❖ Active design (Green architecture) is a movement in contemporary architecture.
❖ It depends mainly on natural resources and recycling principle, which produce no waste.
❖ It describes economic, energy saving, environmentally friendly architecture, which, explore the
relationship between architecture and ecology.
The main principles guiding active design are:
harmony with nature, site interpretation, working with climate, rationalizing new resources, creating
healthy indoor environment, conserving energy, fulfilling users’ needs, and rationalizing cost.

Nanotechnology
Nanotechnology is a technology that allows us to develop materials with improved or totally new properties.
Nanotechnology offers ways to create smaller, cheaper, lighter and faster devices that can do more and clever
things, use less raw materials and consume less energy.
