Wood chipping is a process used to
obtain pulp and paper products from forest trees.
The wood chipping process begins when
the trees are cut down in a selected area of the
forest called a coupe.
Next, the tops and branches of the trees
are cut out and then the logs are taken to the
mill.
At the mill the bark, all of the logs is
removed and the logs are taken to a chipper
which cuts them into small pieces called
woodchips.
The woodchips are then screened to
remove dirt and other impurities. At this stage,
they are either exported in this form or changed
into pulp by chemicals and heat. The pulp is
then bleached and the water content is removed.
Finally the pulp is rolled out to make
paper.

TEXT 2
Thomas Root, a lawyer and experienced
pilot, left Washington early on Thursday
morning in his Cessna light aircraft. He was on a
routine business trip to visit a client in Rocky
Mount, a town 156 miles away.
Just before he reach Rocky Mount, he
radioed to say that he was suffering pains in the
chest. And that was the last air traffic controllers
heard from the plane.
As the plane continued to fly south on
autopilot at 10.000 feet, the US Air Force sent
two planes to intercept it, and they saw Mr.
Root lying unconscious at the controls. The
officers in charge assumed that Mr. Root had
had a heart attack. Hoping that he might still be
alive, they sent a plane carrying parachutists to
rescue Mr. Root.
Six hours after taking off, the airplane
finally ran out of fuel over the Bahamas and
crashed into the sea 14 miles from Eleuthera

just popped right up in the water. He swam to
us. He could talk”, said Captain Raymond
Walizer, co-pilot of a helicopter at the scene.
Mr. Root was immediately taken to hospital.
Doctors found that his lungs were full of carbon
monoxide – but they also found a gunshot
wound on his left side. Police believe that Mr.
Root was shot at close range while he was in the
air.

Devastating Hurricane in Kent
Severe hurricane force winds buffeted their
ways across Kent and much of the south-east of
England last night, leaving a trail of devastation
in their wake. Vast tracts of the country have
been flattened, and damage to property is
estimated at hundreds of millions of pounds.
Yesterday evening there was little warning
of what was about to come. The wind began to
pick up just after 11 p.m. and by 2 p.m., storm
force winds had hit towns on the south coast.
Later, the winds increased in violence until they
eventually reached hurricane force in the early
hours of the morning, lashing the country with
gusts over 130 miles an hour. Hospitals were
warned to expect casualties.
Kent has been very badly hit. In Seven oaks,
an entire forest was flattened by the blast and
uprooted trees were littered over the countryside
like matchsticks. Elsewhere there has been
considerable damage to crops and buildings.
David Hart, from Lamberhurst, awoke to find
his roof had been blown off: “I was woken up by
an incredible noise – it was just like a bomb
going off. I could see the roof flapping about in
the wind. Then it just flew off, and slates and
bricks came crashing down through the ceiling.”
Concern has been raised at the failure of the
authorities to provide adequate warning. A
spokesperson from the Meteorological Office
explained that storm winds had been forecast,
but the hurricane itself had been caused by a
combination of freak weather conditions.
The first priority for Kent Count Council is
the restoration of communications, and the
government is considering giving emergency
aid. Meanwhile, insurance companies are
bracing themselves for a deluge of claims that
could well run to nearly a billion pounds.
