Brooklyn 99

Target Audience:
Brooklyn 99 is a comedy TV show which takes a similar shape of shows such as
The Office or Parks & Recreation. By doing this it includes a very similar target
audience with the main viewership being aged between 18 – 49 and being an even
mixture gender wise as it appeals both to the male and female audience.

A large percentage of the audience will be collected into groups C2, D and E
primarily being students and adults working within middle class and working
class.

Reasons for the Target Audience:

The reasoning behind this target audience comes down to the codes and
conventions of the show as well as the genre. Brooklyn 99 falls under the genres
of comedy and crime with it being a sitcom based around the daily lives of
detectives in a police precinct. The Filming of this show shares strong similarities
with the office with the produces deciding to use more standard, formal camera
techniques during conversations (shot reverse shots) and sticks to using one
technique all the way through this conversation.

The overall production can appear as ‘cheap’ compared to modern day sitcoms,
this is because the producers focus more on the structure and narrative of the
production rather than the visual quality. The reason for the target age being
directed towards 18+ even though the show is rated 14+ is because of the crude
jokes and behaviour placed throughout the show. These jokes would often ben
offensive to the older generation or particularly young viewers.

For the production of the show they will often use modern music and sound
effects when editing to appeal to the target audience and make the show
relatable to their everyday lives. Although more modern songs may be more
expensive to get the rights to it is a worthy investment as it helps keep the
audience by subconsciously tying their lives into the world of Brooklyn 99. They
will also use old hit sounds to create a feeling of nostalgia for some of the older
viewers.
