Introduction:

Water.

There are many different ways science have approached the hydration calculation. One, you multiply
your weight by 2/3 to determine how much water to drink daily.

Second, you multiply your weight by 2/3, then divide it by your age, to determine how much water to
drink daily.

Third, argues that physical activity should be added into the calculation, to balance the physical activity
excretion.

These arguments about the different calculations to consume water, shows that water’s balance is vital for
maintaining normal physiology. Accordingly, adequate fluid intake in the daily diet is very important for
a healthy life. Nevertheless, the current designed tool (cup) doesn’t serve the purpose of drinking water.
This thesis explores the gap between science and culture. How can culture influence the design tool? How
can culture helps us to improve our drinking experience? What are the possibilities on how it can alter our
behaviour of drinking water correctly?
This literature review:

• It will review Quranic and Islamic verses to apply principles that have been forgotten about.
• It will review emotional design strategies and how it can benefit the process of water consumption
• It will review culture observational traditions. Traditions that we grew up with that we do without
knowing, when drinking water.

Science doesn’t take account culture nor the human behavior. Science is basic but humans are not.

The designed tool (cup) doesn’t serve the purpose of drinking water

A cup i

A cup is an open-top container used to hold liquids for pouring or drinking

The regular cup is designed to serve water in a gush effect. Due to its stream line characteristics, the water
is poured down into our mouth until the moment of satiation.

When you drink water standing up, the water which goes in passes through the system
with a straight gush, not really reaching the organs where it is supposed to do the job.
Hence, the impurities which are supposed to go out get deposited in the kidneys and the
bladder.
And worst, drinking water this way doesn’t actually quench your thirst. Since the water
goes directly through, the requires nutrients and vitamins don’t reach the liver and
digestive tract. This is because when you stand and drink water, it travels through the
system really fast and you risk your lungs and heart functions. The oxygen levels also get
disturbed this way.
Hence, there is a very valid reason to sit down and gulp your water, the same way it is
recommended that you sit down and have your meal. Our bodies are designed in a way
that you get maximum health benefits when you sit down and keep your back erect.
When you drink your water from a bottle or a glass sitti ng down, the nutrients reach the
brain and boost its activity. It also aids better digestion this way and ensures that you
don’t feel bloated after having water. Drinking water this way passes through the
regular designed track and ensures all the benefits are achieved in the organs. Toxins go
away, impurities are flushed out and your health improves overall!
