Law is the basic need of any country, and the basic need of law to run its machinery is the police.
The major function of the police is to enforce the law. The First Police Commission in India was
appointed on 17th August 1865 and contained the guidelines which were required to establish the
system of police machinery in India and further defined the police as a governmental department
aimed at maintaining law and order and to act as the guardians of the law.

Each state and union territory of India has its own separate police force. Police machinery of
India is governed by the police act of 1861. The legislation of different states was made after
independence. The first to come into force was the Bombay Police Act of 1951, which also
governs the police forces in Maharashtra. In order to perform its function efficiently and
effectively police needs a place which is called a police station. A police station is located in
every area where it is needed and helps to serve the police and accommodate the members of
police staff and other staff members. The state government frames the rules and regulations of
state police which derives its power from article 246 of the Indian constitution .These rules and
regulations are contained in the police manuals of each state’s police force.

Just the presence of a police station can make a community or neighborhood safer, regardless of
what it is comprised of. The present police force is equipped with a laptops, cell phones and
cameras for collecting evidence which allow him to perform most of his duties from the patrol
car. In an hour of need, crisis and difficulty, when a citizen does not know, what to do whom to
approach, the police station and a police man happen to be the most appropriate and
approachable unit and person for him. The researcher will try to identify the problems faced by
