Evaporation of water takes place from the oceans and the land surface (transpiration) mainly due to solar

energy. The moisture moves in the atmosphere in the form of water vapor (transportation) which
precipitates on the land surface or ocean in the form of rain, snow, hail, etc. (precipitation) Of the amount
reaching the land surface, a part infiltrates in the soil (infiltration) and the remaining water run off the
land surface to join streams (run off). These streams finally discharge into the oceans (surface flow). Some
of the water percolates deep to join groundwater (percolation) and some comes back to the streams or
appears on the surface as springs (groundwater flow). And the water cycle continues.
