NC SCOS Essential Standards and Clarifying Objectives
SOL 1.1 c - count backward orally by ones when given any number between 1 and 30

Lesson objective(s):
The students will be able to count backwards from 30

Differentiation strategies to meet diverse learner needs:

The teacher can give some students a number line for them to point at during the lesson. The teacher can also start
some students at 10, then 20 and then slowly work up their way to 30.

ENGAGEMENT
• Explain to students why this is important. If anyone ever wants to be an astronaut they need to know how to
count down for the rocket launch!
EXPLORATION
• Students will be given a sheet with 30 squares. TSW write numbers in the box counting back from 30 as best as
they can. (students know that this is just an activity and there will not be the pressure of a quiz)

EXPLANATION
• Students will watch a fun and interactive video by scratch garden that shows space animals counting down.
Students are to stand up and count along with the video.

ELABORATION
• Students will be given a rocket worksheet to cut our, with a number line attached to it. The students can use this
as a sort of foldable, because they are able to slide the number line through the rocket and practice counting
down.
EVALUATION
• Because this is the first day and introduction of counting down, the teacher will circulate the classroom so
ensure that the students are on track.
• When the students have completed the craft, have the class clap-count down together for a short review.
