STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

An assessment to ascertain the heights of 40 males and females in grade 10 ages 15-16 at Guy’s
Hill High School.

3
INTRODUCTION

According to Oxford Dictionary, height can be defined as the measurement of something or

someone from head to foot or from base to top. Height is measured using a stadiometer which
consists of a ruler and a horizontal headpiece. The unit height is usually measured in is
centimeters when using the metric system and inches when using the imperial system. The height
of a person can be determined using both units.
For this assessment a total of 40 participants were used to conduct this research , 20 males and
20 females. The findings of this research are presented on charts, graphs, leaf and stem and box
and whiskers. The mean, mode, median and range were calculated for both genders.
At the end of this research the researcher is opting to get a better understanding of the concept of
this assessment. The main aim is to discover which gender is relatively taller at the age of 15-16.

4
METHODOLOGY
Guy’s Hill High School has a population of approximately 1500 students. A population sample
of 20 males and 20 females participated in this research

An interview is essentially a structured conversation where one participant ask questions and the
other provides answers. The data relevant for this research was obtained via this method. The
benefits of using an interview to conduct this research are:

 The interviewee can judge the non-verbal behavior of the respondent

 The interviewee can decide the place for the interview in a private and silent place.

The type of research that was conducted is experimental research. This method of research
involves the manipulation of variables to establish cause and effect of relationships. In order to
get the correct measurement of the height of the participants they were instructed to remove their
shoes, stand upright and lean against the stadiometer.

ANALYSIS OF DATA
The data presented in table 1 represents the heights of the female
participants which is arranged in ascending order. Table 1.2 highlights
the heights of the male participants and is also arranged in ascending
order.

Figure 1 corresponds with table 1 and it is a bar chart showing the heights
of the female participants whilst figure 1.2 coincides table 1.2 revealing
the heights of the male participants.

Table 2.1 is a leaf and stem plot diagram of the heights of the females.
The two first digits consists of the leaf and the last digit
consists of the stem. Table 2.2 is displaying the heights of the males and
similarly it is displayed on a leaf and stem plot where the two first digits
are the leaf and the last digit is the stem.

The box and whiskers diagram highlighted in figure 2.1 shows the
median, lower and upper quartile of the heights of the females. The
median that was calculated is 132. The heights were then separated into 2
quartiles and the value of the lower quartile is 137 and the upper quartile
value is 126.Figure 2.2 is also a box and whiskers diagram and it shows
the median, lower and upper quartile of the heights of the males. The
same procedure were applied and the value of the median is 143. The
lower quartile is 136 and the upper quartile is 149.

Figure 3 reveals the mean of the heights of both males and females in a
bar chart. The chart highlights that the mean for the males is 143 and the
mean for the females is 132.

The line graph in figure 4.1 represents the modal height of the males.
Figure 4.1 displays the modal height in the line graph for the females.
The bar graph that follows in figure 5 shows the median for both male
and females which is 143 and 132 respectively.

22
Table 3.1 highlights the variance of the height of the females which is
912.9. The variance of the height of the males displayed in table 3.2 is
1098.
Discussion Of Findings

After the completion of this research a variety of factors were brought to the
researchers attention. It was discovered that the mean and median value for both the
males and females has the same value, 143 and 132 respectively. The range of the
height of both genders has a value of 24.

The variance height of the males is significantly larger than the variance of the
females. The researcher also discovered that the standard deviation of the height of
the males is greater than the standard deviation of the females.

23
CONCLUSION

At the beginning of this research the main was to determine which gender
is taller at the age of 15-16. This research has shown that the females are
relatively shorter than the males. However, studies have shown that the
average height of the 15-16 age group is 163 centimeters. A number of
factors can lead to them being shorter than normal such as lack of proper
sleep or their genetics.

24
LIMITATIONS

During the process of this investigation the researcher experienced a few roadblocks.
Due to the Corona virus pandemic it was a challenge to find persons who were
willing to participate in this research. Those who were willing to participate had a lot
of questions and concerns about the entire process and it’s relevance. The reluctance
to adhere to the instructions given by the researcher to stand properly against the
stadiometer in order to get a an accurate reading was another major challenge.
Measurements had to be taken more than once because of poor posture.
