Heat Transfer Activity


Penny Experiment

 I-objective:
 II-Materials: glass bottle with opening no larger than a penny, one penny, bowl of ice cold
water.
 
III-Procedure:
Dip the penny and the threads of the bottle neck in the cold water. Put the penny
over the opening of the bottle and wrap hands around the bottle until the penny jumps.

Questions:

1.Why do you think we need to wrap your hand around the bottle?

2.What method of heat is used? Conduction or Convection

3.What causes the air molecules to move faster which makes the penny jump?

Possible Answers:

1.We need to wrap our hands around the bottle to transfer heat .

2. Conduction

3.The heat from your hands is transferred through conduction to the air in the bottle warming
the air that causes the air molecules to move faster which makes the penny jump.
