The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet: Act 1
Students will define and identify iambic pentameter and sonnet form
Students will recognize and distinguish among literary devices related to
Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet
Students will value the artistry of Shakespeare’s writing
Students will begin to evaluate the timelessness of Romeo and Juliet
Students will evaluate their progress to better understand themselves as
learners
1. Do you think Shakespeare’s characters’ traits and actions are realistic (in their time
period or in ours)? Use quotes from the text to exemplify how a character (or more than
one character) behaves or is described in a way that you think is, or is not believable.
2. Juliet’s parents are insistent that she marry Paris, but she claims that “It is an honour
that I dream not of” I.iii.70. Though she is resistant to her parents’ wishes, she is
convinced that she is in love with Romeo by the end of Act 1. How much do you think
what parents want influence their children’s decisions/actions? Relate your response
both to the text and to modern families.
