3 HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION

Environmental hazards: Bitumen emulsions are dispersible in water and should thus be stored away from natural
water sources containing aquatic life. The dispersed bitumen droplets will block the respiratory organs of fish and
prevent assimilation of oxygen. Once the water phase of the emulsion has evaporated, the black, residual binder is
totally insoluble in water and non-toxic.

Additional information: Not classified as dangerous under EC criteria.

4 FIRST AID MEASURES

4.1 First aid – inhalation Not expected to be a problem
4.4 First aid – skin contact Not considered to be a major problem as the product is used mostly at
ambient temperature Rinse the affected area with water.
4.5 First aid – eye contact Seek medical assistance if necessary.
Rinse eye immediately with large amounts of cold water for at least 10
minutes and seek prompt medical advice.
4.6 First aid – ingestion Vomiting should not be induced.
Give water to drink provided with patient is conscious.
Protect the airway if vomiting begins.
Obtain medical attention if necessary.
4.7 Advice to physicians Patients should be treated symptomatically.
5 FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES
The dust suppression emulsionis non-flammable because they contain 38-40% water. In the event that all the
water has evaporated and the residual bitumen has caught alight, the following extinguishing media can be used:

Dry chemical powder.

Carbon dioxide.
Foam.
Sand or earth may be used for small fires only.
Water may be used to cool the surrounding areas.

Protective equipment for fire-fighters : If the residue has caught alight, proper protective equipment
including breathing apparatus must be worn when approaching a fire in a confined space.

6 ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES

6.1 Land spill (small) Use sand, fire retardant treated sawdust, diatomaceous earth etc. to absorb
or contain the spill.
Contaminated material should be collected and placed in suitable, clearly
marked containers for disposal or reclamation in accordance with local laws
and regulations.
6.2 Land spill (large) Prevent the spoil from spreading by construction trenches or barriers with
sand, earth or other containable material. For large spills, protective
clothing should always be worn. Otherwise treat as for small spillages.
See section 13 for information on disposal.
6.3 Water spill Stop source if possible to do so without hazard. Advise authorities of
possible contamination of watercourses, sewers or storm water drains.
6.4 Personal precautions and Evacuate the area of all non essential personnel.
protection Shut off leaks if possible without personal risk.
Protective clothing should be worn when dealing with all spills.
6.5 Environmental precautions Use appropriate containment to avoid environmental contamination.
Prevent further leakage or spillage if safe to do so.

7 HANDLING AND STORAGE

General precautions: Store in an area where spillages will not be allowed to enter dams and rivers.

Handling : The product is generally handled at ambient temperature.

Safety footwear and protective gloves should be worn.

Storage : Store in a dry, well ventilated place.

: Prevent contamination with other types of emulsions.
: Emulsions stored in tanks must be circulated on a weekly basis to prevent settlement.
: Drums must be rolled prior to use.

8 EXPOSURE CONTROLS / PERSONAL PROTECTION MEASURES

8.1 Exposure Controls:The level of protection and types of controls necessary will vary depending upon potential
exposure conditions. Select controls based on a risk assessment of local circumstances. Where material is
heated, sprayed or mist formed, there is a greater potential for airborne concentrations to be generated. Eye
wash and showers for emergency use.

8.2 Personal protective equipment: : If the product is handled cold, plastic chemical-resistant gloves with close-
fitting cuffs will be sufficient. If used hot (80°C maximum), heat-resistant gloves with close-fitting cuffs are
advisable.
: Overalls with close-fitting cuffs.
: Goggles or safety visor.
: Respirators are generally not required, unless a fine mist is generated during spraying operations.
Avoid breathing fine mists.
: Avoid unnecessary skin contact.
8.3 Respiratory protection: No respiratory protection is ordinarily required under normal conditions of use.

8.4 Eye Protection: Goggles or safety visor.

8.5 Protective Clothing: Wear proctective overalls and Saftey Boots

8.6 Environmental exposure controls: Minimise release into the environment.

11 TOXICOLOGICAL INFO
11.1 Basis for assessment Toxicological information has not been determined specifically for this
product. Information given is based on knowledge of the constituents and
the toxicology of similar products.
11.2 Acute toxicity Expected to be low toxicity: LD50 > 2000 mg/kg
11.3 Ingestion No information available.
11.4 Skin contact No information available.
11.5 Eye contact Vapors from hot product expected to be slightly irritant.
11.6 Inhalation Not considered to be an inhalation hazard under normal conditions of use.
If vapors are inhaled, slight irritation of the respiratory tract may occur.
11.7 (Sub)chronic toxicity No effects found.
11.8 Carcinogenicity There is no evidence that bitumen emulsions are carcinogenic to humans.
Repeated and prolonged contact with bitumen can increase the risk of skin
cancer. There is no evidence that exposure to bitumen on its own causes
cancer in humans.
12 ECOLOGICAL INFORMATION
12.1 Basis for assessment Eco-toxicological information has not been determined specifically for this
product, information given is based on a knowledge of the eco-toxicology of
similar products.
12.2 Mobility They are mobile because they are liquid at ambient temperature. Once the
water has evaporated off, a solid bitumen is deposited..
12.3 Persistence / degradability Not readily biodegradable.
12.4 Bioaccumulation Emulsions do not bioaccumulate.
12.5 Ecotoxicity Aqueous mixture.
12.6 Sewerage treatment Information not available.
13 DISPOSAL CONSIDERATIONS
Material disposal : If liquid bitumen emulsion is spilled, the water phase should preferably be allowed to
evaporate. During the evaporation phase, the liquid emulsion should be prevented from entering drains or water
courses.
: The resultant residual bitumen is non-toxic and will be deposited as a black skin on the surface of the
substrate. Neither the liquid emulsion, nor the residue will penetrate the substrate and contaminate the ground
water. As the residual bitumen is non-toxic to the environment, it can be removed to an approved landfill site.

Container disposal : Dispose in accordance with prevailing regulations, preferably to a recognised collector or
contractor. The competence of the collector or contractor should be established beforehand.
