Answer the following questions in about 75-100 words each.

1. Discuss the importance of theatre in the Elizabethan period.?

Theater was important to the Elizabethans as a common way to experience art and to
entertain themselves. Theatre was for people in Early Modern England what television is for
us today. theatres showing plays daily led to permanent acting companies which did not have
to tour and so could invest more time and money into wowing their audience of both sexes
and all social classes. There were many reasons for the importance of theater, including :

One reason was self expression. The common people during this time period were often less
educated Some types of theatre also provided socialization and a way to show ones position.
The theatre was a place of expression and experience that wasn’t offered in any other way for
the Elizabethans.

2. Discuss the important features of Elizabethan drama.?


1.Elizabethan drama was to a great degree secular flavor.
2.Much of Elizabethan drama was based on a rediscovery of classical models, an influence
that can be seen in the classical settings of such Shakespearean plays as Julius Caesar and A
Midsummer Night's Dream and Marlowe's Dido.
3. As was the case in antiquity, all roles in Elizabethan drama, including female roles, were
performed by men
4. Unlike classical drama, Elizabethan drama does not have a chorus and may have more than
three actors
5. Another major innovation of Elizabethan drama was the insertion of comic episodes into
otherwise tragic plays.
6. Another interesting element of many Elizabethan dramas is their historical themes.

3. Why do Horatio and Marcellus decide to tell Hamlet about the Ghost?

They believe that the ghost will talk to hamlet. They think it will talk to him
because they believe the ghost is hamlet's father.
they discuss the apparition they have seen for the past two nights, and which they now hope
to show Horatio: the ghost of the recently deceased King Hamlet, which they claim has
appeared before them on the castle ramparts in the late hours of the night.
that though the ghost did not speak to him, if it is really the ghost of King Hamlet, it will not
refuse to speak to his beloved son.

4. Why does Claudius want Hamlet to remain at court?


Because he wanted to keep an eye on him. Possibly he may have been giving in to Gertrude's
desire to have Hamlet at home because she wanted his company.
Claudius's policy before the death of Polonius is to keep Hamlet under close scrutiny and
isolated from anyone who might conspire with him to stage a coup or a revolt. He wants to be
thought of as a harmless lunatic

5. In the first Act, what three reasons does Horatio list for the superstition of a ghost’s
returning from the grave.?

when Horatio, on watch with Marcellus and Barnardo, First, he asks if the ghost has any
unfinished business, Second, he wonders if perhaps the ghost has information about the fate
of Denmark, which, by imparting it to the watchmen, may prevent some tragedy. Finally,
Horatio asks if the late King Hamlet has some ill-gotten treasure buried somewhere, which
was a common reason for spirits to walk the earth in the folklore of the day.
