FRANCISCO U. SUMAGAYSAY, SR.

BIOGRAPHY

Francisco U. Sumagaysay, Sr. was the youngest of the eight children of


Policarpo Sumagaysay and Basilia Umahag. He first saw the light on January 29, 1900.
He took his Elementary Education at the Santa Barbara Elementary School. He
completed his Secondary Education at the Iloilo Provincial High School and graduated
with the degree of Bachelor of Science in Commerce at the University of Manila in 1929.
He was a service-oriented man inspired by his loving wife, Consuelo Ledesma
Villarete of Jaro, Iloilo City. They were blessed with an only child, Francisco V
Sumagaysay, Jr. He was a man committed to defend and serve his country during the
World War II and during the height of Communist Insurgency in our town.
He was also a man of great achievements- a businessman, an educator, a farmer,
and an active member of the Civil Resistant Movement under Governor Tomas
Confesor. Below are the pieces evidence of his undying efforts to serve his country and
countrymen:
1. A businessman in his own right.
2. Iloilo Sales Representative of Manila-based Tuason and Sons, Inc.
3. Underwater, Philippine-American Insurance.
4. Dealer, ESSO-Philippines, Inc. and had received several achievement awards for
his exemplary accomplishments in achieving business goals on February 27,
1970 in Manila.
5. Organizer of the Santa Barbara (Iloilo) FACOMA, Inc. and owner of the FACOMA
Lot and was also awarded a Certificate of Appreciation for his invaluable services
rendered to the farmer-recipients of the cooperative.
6. Faculty member, Pototan High School.
7. Faculty member, Santa Barbara High School.
8. A modern farmer and a successful one.
9. Joined the Civil Resistance Movement in the mountain of Panay during the World
War II.
10. Donor of the Lot where the Headquarters of the former Philippines Constabulary
stands upon appeal of Mayor Natalia Provido in defense of our democracy and
freedom against the Communist incursion in Santa Barbara. This was his best
contribution and a living legacy to the people of Santa Barbara and the Province
of Iloilo and his countrymen as a whole.

Our devine creator called for him on August 27, 1987 at the age of 87,
leaving behind a legacy of never to be forgotten - THE HOME OF THE PNP
PROVINCIAL HEADQUARTERS COMMAND at Barangay San Sebastian, Santa
Barbara, Iloilo.
