CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

In this chapter, the researchers will introduce the study which is all about the

“The Relationship of Traditional Learning and Academic Performance of Grade 12

HUMSS Students in Marikina High School S.Y. 2020-2021”

Background of the Study

Education is a key factor for sustainable development (Chimombo 2005). The

significance of education, especially in developing countries, is increasing because of

progressing pressure to catch up with the developed world regarding, for example, global

competitiveness (Hawkins 2002). Predictably, educational settings are different in

developing countries than in developed countries, such as low quality of education and

narrow possibilities in attending schools in rural areas because of far distances and high

opportunity costs (Ibid 2005). Chimombo, 2005 opines that country-specific

circumstances have to be improved regarding compulsory and free education to foster

general access to education.

Traditional learning takes place in a classroom setting. Traditional learning

starts from the idea of total control of the teacher over students in a way a curricular

content is taught (Novak, 2003: Lulat, 2005: 179). In other words, the teacher conceives

their students as empty holes in knowledge, and only their teachings the holes can be

filled. Traditional learning involves the interaction of students and teachers to motivate

achieve higher marks. And in the classroom helps the students that directly share their
views and clarify their own queries with the teacher, thus getting their questions

answered right away.

Academic performance is the measurement of students' achievement across

various academic subjects. Academic performance is important for an institution for good

outcomes that lead to job performance in the future (Kuncel et al., 2005). Students are

tending to finish their studies on time instead of delaying or extend. That’s why if they

make it on time they feel satisfied with their achievement it is meant they have a good

academic performance.

Research Objectives

The primary aim of this study is to investigate/find the relationship of traditional learning

and academic performance. The specific objectives are as follows:

I. To know the relationship of traditional learning and academic performance of

Grade 12 HUMSS Students in Marikina High School.

II. To ascertain the link of traditional learning and academic performance.

Statement of the Problem

A traditional learning is where a teacher moderates and regulates the flow

of information and knowledge. Students are expected to continue developing their

knowledge of a subject outside of school through homework exercises. Here, students’

main resource is their instructor who only teaches them face-to-face.

This research study is directed to answer the following questions:

1. What affects the academic performance in traditional learning?

2. What is the relationship between traditional learning and academic performance

of Grade 12 HUMSS Students?

3. How does traditional learning affect the students academic performance?

4. What is the solution to the problem of traditional learning?

Significance of the Study

The results will benefit the following:

 Students – This study will help them to know the relationship of traditional

learning and academic performance in their study in school.

 Parents – This study will inform them what are the relationship of traditional

learning and academic performance in their children.

 Teachers –This study will help the teachers to assist and guide their students.

 Future Researchers –This study will benefit future researchers because this will

provide them with a better basis or guide to use in their own study.

Hypothesis

There is no significant relationship between the Traditional Learning and

Academic Performance of the Grade 12 HUMSS students of Marikina High School.

Definition of Terms

These are the definition of the terminologies that are present in the study:
Relationship. It is the way in which two or more concepts are connected, or the

state of being connected/related.

Traditional Learning. It refers to learning mode that takes place in a classroom

setting.

Grade 12 Students. It refers to the selected Grade 12 students as the respondents

assessed in the study.

Scope and Delimitation

This quantitative inquiry is focused only to fifty (50) Grade 12 HUMSS

students of Marikina High School.

This study limits its coverage to the Grade 12 HUMSS students of Marikina

High School only. Its main purpose is to determine the relationship between traditional

learning to their academic performances.

This study considers every aspect of traditional learning such as one-on-one

interaction with the teacher, learning with the traditional visual aids, and school

environment, that has an impact on their academic performances. Each of the respondents

is given the same questionnaires for them to answer. And this study focuses on the

current Grade 12 HUMSS students of Marikina High School of the present school year,

2020-2021.

Conceptual / Theoretical Framework

According to the study conducted in Najran University, the students'

achievement measured and based on the course objectives in terms of assignments, class
participations papers, and tests which are all traditional methods for assessment. On the

other hand, face-to-face instruction provides dynamic learning attributes not found in

web-based teaching (Kemp and Grieve, 2014). In addition, according to (Roval and

Jordan, 2004), traditional classroom learning is a well-established modality in which

other students may value face-to-face interation, pre and post-class discussions,

communal learning and, organic student-teacher bonding. Also, on research article

entitled "A Comparative Analysis of Student Performance in an Online vs. Face-to-Face

Environmental Science Course From 2009 to 2016", that campus education provides

students both accredited staff and research libraries. Stidents can rely upon

administratiors to aid in course selection and provide professorial recommendations.

Library technicians can help learners edit their papers, locate valuable study material, and

improve study habits. Research libraries may provide materials not accessible by

computer. In all, the traditional classroom experience gives students important auxiliary

tools to maximize classroom performance.
