(CRB), a.k.a. Oryctes rhinoceros, is an invasive insect that kills coconut trees and other palm species by feeding on the plant’s crown. There is a confirmed presence of at least two biotypes of the CRB in Palau, Nudivirus (OrNV) resistant CRB-G versus all other CRB types. The resistant CRB-G has caused the devastation of palm trees throughout Southeastern Asia and Pacific. The reason why we chose this topic is to encourage people to save coconut trees from CRB (Coconut Rhino Beetles) from destroying coconut trees. BACKGROUD INFORMATION The coconut rhinoceros beetle (CRB), Oryctes rhinoceros, has been attacking coconut trees since it was first discovered on the island in and has proven to be voracious and tenacious. The coconut rhinoceros beetle, is a major pest of coconut palm, oil palm and other palm species. Palms are damaged when adult beetles bore into the crowns of palms to feed on sap. Tree mortality occurs when beetles destroy the growing tip (meristem). Immature beetles (grubs) do no damage. They feed on dead, decaying vegetation in breeding sites. Preferred breeding sites are dead, standing coconut stems, and piles of decaying vegetation such those left behind by typhoons or after replanting of oil palm plantations. GROUP MEMBERS: 1. MATERIALS CRB (Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle) Rotten Coconut Logs Fish Net (Trap) PROCEDURE Step 1: Find rotten coconut log Step 2: Make a pile of rotten coconut logs Step 3: Get a fish net Step 4: Put the fish net on top the pile of rotten coconut log and you have yourself a beetle trap. OBJECTIVE To inform how CRB (Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle), an invasive species, can cause damage to coconuts. To push awareness in protecting coconut tree from CRB (Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle) given that 90% of Palau is covered by coconut tree which is known to be the mother medicine. CONCLUSION Coming to our final presentation, we learned that CRB (Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle), is known as the major pest of coconuts here in Palau. Without controlling these pests, it would cause too much damage which affect the crops of coconut. Being aware of this study will help people realize that coconut trees in Palau may be at risk if these pests is not taken care of.
