Management of T&P NMs

JAN-9201/7201

Temporary and Preliminary Notices to mariners (T&P NMs) are important items to be
considered while handling ENC data. Many objects within the ENC data have ‘time
varying attributes‘, which can satisfy the conditions of displaying ‘temporary‘ and
‘preliminary‘ objects.

Therefore, a number of Hydrographic Offices have started to include T&P NMs in the
weekly corrections of their ENCs. It is worth mentioning that not all ENC producers are
doing so. In this regard, Admiralty has prepared a list which is updated constantly,
showing the status of T&P production and incorporation in ENCs for all the HOs.

This document is also part of the “Training Materials”.
If the Producer Country (as indicated through the first two characters of a chart name)
of your installed ENCs is mentioned in the “Status of T&P NMs in ENCs“ list, then you can
use the „Date-dependent“ feature during route planning. To do this, open [Chart]
from the [Menu] and select the „[Date-dependent View] button. Make sure the
[Enable Date-dependent View] checkbox is enabled. Select the required start and
end date and all date-dependent ENC objects for that time will be displayed. By using
the „Cursor Pick…“ you can get further information on the objects.

Admiralty provides an option to users called ‘Admiralty Information Overlay‘(AIO),

which contains all T&P NMs in force and highlights navigationally significant differences
between ENCs and Admiralty paper charts, the so called EP NMs.
To activate the AIO, access [Menu] and select [View]. Click on the [Options] button
and select [AIO/T&P] from the classification pane. Select the [All AIO Objects]
checkbox, to display the mentioned AIO data categories. Select the respective
checkboxes to switch the certain categories on or off.

Another option is to enter the T&P NMs manually into ENCs using the „Manual Updates“
function. The Navigation Officer will go through the T&P NMs in force during passage
planning and see which T&Ps are applicable for the current voyage. A log should be
kept on board and used for inserting/removing/controlling all T&P notices as
appropriate. The validity and applicability of the T&Ps throughout the voyage has to
be monitored accordingly.
