LESSON 1 What is Needlecraft?

(https://www.crafterscompanion.eu/media/catalog/category/527x249_cat_image_Sewing_Needle_craft.jpg)

Gazing back on history, Needlecraft is noted as one of the oldest forms of art in human
civilization. It started with practical beginnings, to mend clothing, and for decades it
has grown into a creative endeavor. It now stands for the purpose of intensifying and
embellishing textiles for decorative and communicative purposes.

Over the years Needlework has been seen as a rationale of someone’s wealth, social
status, ethnic identity, or systems of belief.

OBJECTIVE
At the end of the lesson you are expected to:
1. Understand Concepts in Needle Craft.

NEEDLE CRAFT SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

To avoid sewing mishaps, these are the safety precautions that should be observed
when crafting:

Safety precautions when working with fabric, thread and accessories:

1. Keep all accessories in a special container.

2. When cutting thread/ fabric do not bite through with your teeth or tear it with
your hands;
3. The length of a thread when sewing must not exceed the length of the distance
to the elbow;
4. When working with seed bead, use shallow containers (e.g. saucer);

Safety precautions when working with needles and pins:

1. Use pincushion when pins and needles are not in use;

2. Use thimble when sewing;
3. Do not use rusty needles and pins;
4. While sewing keep needles 35 centimeters away from your eyes.

Safety precautions when working with scissors:

1. Do not hold scissors with sharp sides up, and do not use them when central
fastener is weakened;
2. Do not cut in motion;

Page | 8
3. When working hold the material with your left hand so that the fingers are away
from the blade.

Safety precautions when working with electric appliances:

1. Before operating the appliance, check that the cord is in proper condition, and
if there are any faults, correct them;
2. Turn on and turn off the appliance, holding the plug with dry hands;
3. Do not leave the active appliance unattended;
4. Place iron only on a special heat-resistant stand;
5. When working, make sure that the cord does not touch the iron soleplate;
6. Keep the appliance in an upright position;
7. Choose an ironing mode suiting the fabric composition;
8. When ironing, do not touch hot surfaces of the iron with hands and do not
dampen the fabric being ironed with plenty of water.

Safety precautions when working on the sewing machine:

1. Before starting work remove needles and pins from the product;
2. Check the holding strength of the needle and presser;
3. When working, the distance to the machine has to be 10-15 cm;
4. No foreign objects have to be located next to the machine during operation;
5. When sewing, hands have to be at a safe distance from the moving parts of the
machine.

TOOLS AND MATERIALS IN NEEDLEWORK

There are wide variety of tools and materials available in the market, these are selected
with depends upon the type of needlecraft. Selecting the proper material affects the
quality of your work, thus you must be fastidious in choosing the right tool for your
project.

1. THREAD/YARN

A long, thin strand of cotton, nylon, or other fibers used

in sewing or weaving.

2. FABRIC

Flexible material consisting of a net

work of natural or artificial fibers (yarn or thread). Yarn is
produced by spinning raw fibers of wool, flax, cotton,
hemp, or other materials to produce long strands.

3. NEEDLE
A long slender tool with a pointed tip at one end and a
hole at the other. Hand sewing needles have three
parts: tip, shaft and eye.
D
Different type of Needles: Tapestry Needle, Crewel,
Chenille and knitting needle

Page | 10
a. Tapestry Needle
These needles have a large eye and a blunt round tip designed
for the used in needlepoint, cross stitch and plastic canvass work.
These blunt needles are also often used for wrapped stitches
seen in silk ribbon embroidery

b. Crewel

These needles have a long eye and a very sharp tip. These are
ideal for people who have difficulty seeing the eye of the
needle.

Also known as Embroidery needles

c. Chenille Needle
These needles are similar to crewel needles as they have sharp
tip and large eyes. However they are shorter in length and wider
in width than standard embroidery needles.

d. Knitting Needles
They generally have a long shaft and taper at their end, but
they are not nearly as sharp as sewing needles.

ACTIVITY 03

B. These needles are shorter in length
and wider in width.
C. Commonly known as embroidery

4. SCISSORS
Hand-operated shearing tool consists of a pair of metal blades pivoted so that
the sharpened edges slide against each other

Types of Scissors used in Sewing:

A. Dressmaker Shears

Offer a longer cut ideal for cutting patterns, trimming seams

or cutting long swaths of fabric.

B. Embroidery Scissors

These are specially designed with long thin pointy tips to

allow someone to cut threads in tight areas accurately
and with a clean sharp cut.

C. Pinking Scissors

Scissors with saw-toothed blades that leaves a zigzag

pattern instead of a straight edge.

5. TRIMMER

Use in trimming excess threads.

6. TAMBOUR FRAME/ HOOP

A pair of concentric circular or elliptical rings used in holding the

fabric.

7. THIMBLE

Used in pushing the needle and protecting the finger
