Service Information – Incipient cracks on spreader extension beam

Cause of Failure
Kalmar has experienced a small numbers of old DRS, DRD4xx and DCD gantry
machines showing signs of stress at the spreader extension beams.

Cause of Action
Kalmar recommends as a part of all scheduled Service Inspection that the
extension beams should be inspected in order to determine if any cracks or
deformations are present. These cracks may appear on the spreader extension
beams 40’ position (see photo below). To ensure that no cracks have started, the
intended area must be cleaned and examined carefully.

Optional design improvement kit

Kalmar has designed an optional design improvement kit for the above
mentioned range of machines, with regards to repair and welding instructions for
the spreader extension beam. This repair kit is designed to give an additional
strength to the extension beam in cases of signs of stress at the 40’ position. This
kit can also be applied on later design of machines like the DRF4xx or on the
DCF gantry, should any of these show signs of stress in the future.

The kit can be ordered from Kalmar Ltd. Spare Part department in Ljungby on
P/#: 923944.1089

Kalmar considers this kit to be a design improvement. Price and availability

for the kit will be quoted by Kalmar Ltd. Spare Part Dept. Ljungby.
