The wise son says: What mean those testimonies, statutes, and

The wicked son says: What is this service to you?—to you, not

denies the essential thing; you should, therefore, blunt his teeth by
saying: This is done because of that, which the Lord did for me.
when I went from Egypt: i . e. for me, but not for him; for had he
been there, he would not have been thought worthy to be redeemed.
The simple son says: What is this? And then thou shalt an-

Now (Kabbi Jose argues thus): i f by the finger only they were
smitten with ten plagues, hence, you can deduce, that in Egypt they
were smitten with ten plagues, and at the sea they were smitten with
fifty plagues.
Rabbi Akiba said: from whence can i t be proved that every plague
which the Most Holy, blessed be he, brought upon the Egyptians i n
Egypt, consisted of five plagues?—Answer: From what is said: he
sent forth against them the fierceness of his anger, wrath, indigna-
tion, and trouble; also, by sending evil angels among *,hem. Now,
the FIERCENESS OP HIS ANGER is one, WRATH two, INDIGNATION three,
TROUBLE four, and SENDING EVIL ANGELS five. Hence you can de-
duce, that in Egypt they were smitten with fifty plagues, and at the
?׳ea they were smitten with two h-mdred and fifty plagues.

when he smote the Egyptians, and delivered our houses. And the

Then the angel of death came, and slew the slaughterer! who
had slaughtered the ox, which had drunk the water, which had ex-
tinguished the fire, which had burnt the staff, which had smitten the
dog, which had bitten the cat, which had devoured the kid, which
my father bought for two zuzim; one only kid, one only kid.
Then came the Most Holy, blessed be He, and slew the angel of
death, who had slain the slaughterer, who had slaughtered the ox,
which had drunk the water, which had extinguished the fire, which
had burnt the staff, which had smitten the dog, which had bitten the
cat, which had devoured the kid, which my father bought for two
zuzim; one only kid, one only kid.
