Guide for Teachers

3
This guide is meant for the Teacher-In-Charge (TIC), the one who submits the registration form and
is responsible to conduct Beaver Computational Thinking Competition (Beaver) in the school. Please
be noted that there can only be ONE TIC for each school. However, the TIC may get help from other
teachers to organize and invigilate students during the competition.

BEFORE THE COMPETITION

On 13th April 2018, teachers-in-charge will receive an email with a set of usernames and passwords
to be given to the participants.

Example:

USERNAME PASSWORD CATEGORY

2018001E00 ernbeofoode1 ECOLIER

2018001E01 adickwishive ECOLIER

2018001E02 esifaterisho ECOLIER

Note that each pair of username and password is already assigned to a specific CATEGORY. Teachers
must make sure it is given to the right participant according to the category.
Using the example of the first username, 2018001E00, the breakdown of the username is as follows.

Year School ID Category Student ID

2018 001 E 00

Beaver should be treated like a regular examination. Therefore, the TIC must find a suitable venue
for the participants to be seated. As Beaver requires all participants to use the laptop/computer, schools’
computer labs should be suitable provided that the students are seated apart from each other.
Participants must be informed of the competition venue and time in advance.
If a registered participant is unable to participate, the TIC may substitute another participant to
take his / her place. Teachers are not required to inform the secretariat as the students themselves will key
in their details before the competition starts. However, please be informed that no refund shall be
made due to absence.

DISTRIBUTING THE USERNAMES & PASSWORDS

You are responsible to distribute the usernames and passwords to all participants.
IMPORTANT: Do not divulge the username and password of a participant to another participant.
The following is how we would suggest you to do:
1. Print the Excel sheet that contains the usernames and passwords.
2. Cut out each set of username and password.
3. Distribute them to the participants according to their categories before the competition begins.

REMINDER: TIC should assist students as they log in, fill in their particulars and prepare for the
challenges. Please refer to pages 5,6,7 & 8 in this manual guide.

Please ensure all participants take part in the competition at the respective school venue,
at the same time. Participants are not allowed to sit for the competition at home or at any
personal venue.
As per other examinations and competition, participants should not be given/receive any help
from anyone else throughout the duration of the competition.

FAQ

8
How many times can a participant take part in thecompetition?

A participant can only take part once and this will be counted when he/she has logged in.

What is the difference between the language versions? Can a participant switch languages
during the contest?

One version is in English while the other is in Bahasa Melayu. Everything else remains the same
which includes; the questions, scoring method, level of difficulties etc. No, Participants are not
allowed to switch between languages.

What will happen if a participant starts answering less than 45 minutes before the
competition period ends?

The competition will end at exactly 10PM, 18th April 2018 no matter the circumstances. Therefore,
we suggest participants to take advantage of the 30 hour window and start answering the
questions earlier on.

What will happen to the timer if I am logged out?

If a participant is logged out, the timer will still continue the count down. The participant can still
continue by logging in using the same username and password, as long as there is still time left on
the timer. Participants can end the competition before the time is up however, no extra points will
be given for finishing early.

How many times can a participant answer a particular question?

Participants can change or erase answers as many times as they want before the time is up. They may
also leave questions unanswered (this is a useful strategy at times as no points will be deducted for
questions that are left unanswered)

How are the questions arranged?

The questions are arranged in increasing order of difficulty. This can be seen at the list of questions
at the “Contest” tab; Type A is easy, B is medium and C is hard. Participants are free to answer the
questions in any order they like.
