SECTION B
THIRD SEMESTERT-OBJECTIVE
‘To study the effect of initial concentration on sedimentation characteristics.
EQUIPMENT
Sedimentation apparatus.
THEORY
Sedimentation
Sedimentation is the process of settling suspended particles in the water due to
gravity and density. Sedimentation is used to get concentrated slurry and pure liquid.
Formulae
‘The final volume and the sedimentation volume can be found by:
+ Final volume = Final height x tube area / Initial solid weight
+ Sedimentation Volume = Height at some point x tube area / Initial solid
weightPROCEDURE
1. Take ground chalk and make two solutions of different concentrations by mixing
chalk in the water.
2. Put both solutions of equal volumes in the tubes.
3, Note the initial height of the tube up to the constant composition zone.
4, Then note the height after every 10 minutes.
5, Plot the In (Ho-H) vs. time (where Ho=initial height) and find the
sedimentation volume for two solutions.
