What are the main OPEX drivers for FSRU
Owners and Operators today?

• Avoid drydocking • Simplify Class • Avoid/simplify tank

inspection regime at inspection every 5
location years

Alternative approach to UWILD [Offshore Technical Guidance DNVGL-OTG-08]

An alternative approach to UWILD by This methodology may be beneficial for vessels
inspections from inside of the hull may be operating in areas of poor visibility making
accepted on a case by case basis provided traditional bottom survey by diver or ROV less
following conditions are met: effective or difficult to carry out.

Same requirements as for UWILD, in addition, Should the vessel move from its fixed location,
leak detection systems may be installed for other than for short local relocation, DNV GL shall
continuous monitoring of structural water be contacted to determine necessary additional
tightness surveys and possible drydocking prior
to resuming normal trading.

Floor scanning from inside (example)

MEC (Magnetic Eddy Current) technique Ballast tank challenges

• High sensitivity in detecting corrosion, pitting and • Direct sizing of defects during scanning without
local defects in tanks with: the need for Ultrasonic verification
➢ plate thickness up to 30mm • Minimal surface preparation prior to inspection
➢ coating thickness up to 10mm • High inspection speed of approx. 25m/min

Clarification with Flag Administration

Flag administrations have responded positively to accept this new

approach

They (Flag) expect the survey outcome to give same safety level as
the traditional survey method

The Flag may however request to be contacted to clarify execution of

alternative methods

Methodology should be tested and developed further in line with gained

experience

With 77 FPSOs and close to 60% of all FSRUs in class, DNV GL will
capitalize on the experience already gained and carry out these
inspections to the benefit of all involved without jeopardizing safety

Every gas freeing operation will emit 1200 ~
1500 Cubic meters of Methane into the
atmosphere

ASP requirements – Primary barrier - membrane

▪ The primary barrier shall be continuously monitored for tightness by gas detection in the inter
barrier space. Gas concentrations shall be kept within acceptance criteria when the system is
operated in automatic regulation (breathing) mode without forced nitrogen sweeping.

ASP requirements – Secondary barrier - membrane

▪ The secondary barrier shall be checked for its effectiveness at every renewal survey either by
– a global vacuum test in aerated or gassed up condition, or
– by a thermographic test, and
– The tests shall be carried out in accordance with procedures and acceptance criteria developed
by the system designer.

DNVGLs FSRU approach – ASP (Alternative Survey Program)

The weather conditions over the last 5 year period have to be documented either by means of reliable
weather data (met-ocean data), or by a motion sensor fitted onboard the unit (FSRU)
