Script
by Jenny Phillips

Play the recorded narration: Children of Light

Reader: On the ancient road to Damascus, a light came suddenly from heaven and shone around
Saul who had been greatly persecuting the church. “ . . . he fell to the earth and heard a
voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul why persecutest thou me?” Saul was struck blind and
left in darkness for three days. The Lord called the disciple Ananias to go to Saul, “and
putting his hands on him said “Brother Saul, the Lord . . . hath sent me, that thou mightest
receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost. And immediately there fell from his
eyes as it had been scales: and he received sight forthwith, and arose, and was baptized.”
(Acts 9:4; 17-18)

Later in the New Testament, Saul, now given the new name of Paul, tells king Aggripa of
the event on the road to Damascus. We learn that the Lord had said to Paul: “rise, and
stand upon thy feet: for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a
minister and a witness . . . unto . . . the Gentiles, unto whom now I send thee, To open
their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto
God.” (Acts 26:16-18)

Reader: The apostle Paul truly testified to men of the light, and bid them come from the darkness.
He said: “Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee
light.” (Ephesians 5.) “But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake
you as a thief. Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of
the night, nor of darkness. The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast
off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.” (Romans 13.

When we let the Lord pull us out of darkness and bring us into light as he did with Paul,
we can become a mighty instrument in the hands of the Lord to bring that light to others.
The Lord said: “Behold, do men light a candle and put it under a bushel? Nay, but on a
candlestick, and it giveth light to all that are in the house; Therefore let your light so
shine before this people, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who
is in heaven. (3 Nephi 12:15-16.)

Perform the song: Light on a Hill

Reader: In the Book of Mormon, both Lehi and Nephi saw the vision of the tree of life. In that
vision our world is symbolized as a dark and dreary waste, and great mists of darkness
cover the land. In our world today, we often feel surrounded by darkness. But the Lord
said to Nephi: “I will be your light in the wilderness.” The Lord has not left us alone in
the dark. Christ said: “I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me
should not abide in darkness.” (John 12)

ii
Reader: As we make our way through this dark and dreary world, we may feel lost in the great
storms and adversities of this life. But, in the words of Melvin J. Ballard: “We are not in
the dark. The light is in the ship; the captain is inspired. He knows where he is going.
God is at the helm and the storms may blow, they may become furious, but I declare to
you, as the Lord lives, that if the Latter-day Saints will only keep his commandments and
accept of the plan he has offered, God is bound; his promise will be fulfilled, we shall
come out victorious . . . if we can only weather the storm that is threatening.”
(Elder Melvin J. Ballard, Conference Report, April 1927, Fourth Day—Morning Meeting
161. PD)

Perform the Song: Holding on to You

Play the Recorded Narration: The Brother of Jared

Perform the Song: I Call Your Name

Reader: Long ago, the great prophet Moses spoke face to face with God. Satan then appeared and
told Moses to worship him. Moses asked Satan a profound question: “where is thy glory,
for it is darkness unto me?” As he tempted Moses, Satan often bids u to worship him. He
appears through television shows and movies that drive out the spirit. He comes through
immodest clothing and impure thoughts. He wants us to worship him and preoccupy
ourselves with our looks, our popularity, and our things.

We control the amount of light and darkness in our lives by the way we handle Satan
each time when he comes to us saying, “worship me.”

Reader: Because we have the gospel of Jesus Christ we know who we are and why we are here.
This knowledge gives us strength to rise against the pulls and tugs of this world and the
temptations of Satan. We learn from the scriptures, that the prophet Moses had this same
knowledge of who he was. God told Moses that he had created man and all things were
numbered unto Him. God explained: “they are mine and I know them.”

Moses stood strong against the Tempter because he knew he was a child of God. When
Satan appeared to Moses, “ . . . Moses looked upon Satan and said: Who art thou? For I
am a Son of God.”

Amazing strength and light will flow into our lives, if we had that same answer always
ready in our hearts when Satan tempted us: Who art thou? For I am a daughter of God.

Perform the Song: The Maker’s Touch

Reader: As Lehi neared the end of his life, he pleaded with his sons: “hear the words of a
trembling parent . . .O my sons . . . arise from the dust . . . and be men . . . .”

Our Father in heaven calls to us today, to arise; to be young women of faith and
strength—a light in this dark world. Ezra Taft Benson said: “I have a feeling that in many
cases at least these choice spirits have been held back to come forth in this day and age
when the gospel is upon the earth in its fullness, and that they have great responsibilities
in establishing the kingdom.” (Ezra Taft Benson, Conference Report, April 1951,
Afternoon Meeting 48 - 49. PD)

Perform the song: Arise and Shine Forth
