ABSTRACT

IN THIS PROJECT, WE WANT TO CREATE ELECTRICITY

WITH THE HEAT UNDERGROUND. NOWADAYS, THERE ARE

MANY SOURCES OF RENEWABLE ENERGY THAT CAN CREATE

ELECTRICITY WHICH IS SUNLIGHT, WIND, WATER, AND ETC.

THESE EXAMPLES CAN BE USED IN THE HOUSE AND THE

SMALL FACTORY. USING THERMAL ENERGY FROM THE

EARTH  OR GEOTHERMAL ENERGY TO PRODUCE

ELECTRICITY IS ALSO ONE WAY TO PRODUCE ELECTRICITY

WHICH IS ALSO RENEWABLE. APPLYING THE FIRST LAW OF

THERMODYNAMICS, THE THERMAL ENERGY FROM THE

GEOTHERMAL RESERVOIR WILL TRANSFER INTO THE WELL

AND SIMPLY HEAT UP THE WATER INTO STEAM AND SPIN

THE TURBINE. DESPITE HOW CLEAN THE ENERGY IS, IT IS

STILL NOT POPULAR TO USE IN SMALL SCALE BUILDINGS

AND IN MOST AREAS OF THE WORLD. MOST OF THE

GEOTHERMAL POWER PLANTS ARE FOUND IN THE BIG

POWER PLANT FACTORY WHICH SEEMS TO BE MORE

EFFICIENT.
ABSTRACT

FOR OUR MODEL, WE REPLICATE THE DRY STEAM

GEOTHERMAL ENERGY POWER PLANT ON A SMALLER SCALE

TO PRODUCE ELECTRICITY POWERING A LIGHT BULB. THE

MODEL BASICALLY WORKS BY HEATING UP THE WATER

CONTAINER MOVING THE STEAM THROUGH THE PIPE TO

BLOW THE TURBINE AND GENERATE ELECTRICITY. WE

DECORATE THE MODEL TO HELP US VISUALIZE HOW THE

POWER PLANT MIGHT WORK IN THE CITY. MOST OF THE

MATERIAL THAT WE USE TO DO THE MODEL, WERE MOSTLY

REUSED AND RECYCLED ITEMS. THIS HELPS US TO SAVE

THE COST OF THE MATERIAL AND EQUIPMENT, AND WE

ALSO HELP THE WORLD BY REUSING THE OBJECT THAT IS

ALREADY USED.
INTRODUCTION

GEOTHERMAL ENERGY IS THE HEAT THAT COMES FROM

THE SUBSURFACE OF THE EARTH. IT IS CONTAINED IN

THE ROCKS AND FLUIDS BENEATH THE EARTH’S CRUST

AND CAN BE FOUND AS DEEP AS TO THE MAGMA WHICH

IS EARTH’S HOT MOLTEN ROCK. TO PRODUCE POWER

FROM GEOTHERMAL ENERGY, PEOPLE DUG WELLS

ABOUT A MILE INTO UNDERGROUND RESERVOIRS TO

HAVE ACCESS TO THE STEAM AND HOT WATER BENEATH

THE EARTH, WHICH CAN THEN BE USED TO DRIVE

TURBINES CONNECTED TO POWER GENERATORS. THERE

ARE THREE TYPES OF GEOTHERMAL POWER PLANTS

WHICH ARE DRY STEAM, FLASH, AND BINARY.

DRY STEAM IS THE OLDEST AND MOST KNOWN FORM OF

GEOTHERMAL TECHNOLOGY AND IT IS COMMONLY USED

THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES. THE WAY IT WORKS

IS THAT IT TAKES THE STEAM OUT OF THE GROUND, 

USES IT TO DIRECTLY DRIVE A TURBINE, CONDENSES

BACK INTO LIQUID, THEN BACK INTO THE RESERVOIRS.


INTRODUCTION

THE PRINCIPLES INVOLVING IN THIS PROJECT IS THE

FIRST LAW OF THERMODYNAMICS WHICH STATED THAT

“ ENERGY CAN NEITHER BE CREATED NOR DESTROYED,

IT CAN ONLY CHANGE FROM ONE FORM TO ANOTHER”

WHICH IS CLEARLY DEMONSTRATED IN OUR PROJECT OF

HEAT TRANSFERRING FROM THE STEAM IN THE

RESERVOIRS INTO THROUGH THE TURBINE AND TURN

INTO ELECTRICAL ENERGY.


OBJECTIVES

THE PURPOSE OF PERFORMING THIS PROJECT IS TO

UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPT OF HOW GEOTHERMAL

ENERGY IS USED IN POWER PLANTS AND APPLY IT TO

THE REAL FIELD. OUR PROJECT WAS INSPIRED BY THE

GEYSERS IN CALIFORNIA WHICH IS THE LARGEST

GEOTHERMAL FIELD IN THE WORLD. WE BUILD THE

MODEL BY USING VARIOUS KINDS OF EQUIPMENT, WE

ARE TRAINED TO USE MANY DIFFERENT TYPES OF TOOLS

SO THAT WE HAVE EXPERIENCE AND BE ABLE TO USE IT

THAT WILL BENEFIT US IN OUR UPCOMING WORKS.

DURING THE PROCESS OF WORKING, WE WILL BE

FACING MANY DIFFICULTIES AND ERRORS, SO WE WILL

NEED TO FIGURE OUT WAYS TO SOLVE AND ADAPT TO

THESE KINDS OF ISSUES AND LEARN TO AVOID THEM IN

THE FUTURE.

THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS PROJECT IS TO SIMULATE THE

GEOTHERMAL HEAT PUMP SYSTEM ON A SMALLER

SCALE. OUR GOAL IS TO MAKE THE SYSTEM WORK WELL

ENOUGH SO THAT THE LED ATTACHED TO THE SYSTEM

GLOWS TO SHOW THAT THE SYSTEM CAN GENERATE

POWER.
OBJECTIVES

THE CYCLE - WE WANT TO MAKE THIS SYSTEM BE

ABLE TO REUSE THE WATER THAT HAD CHANGED

FORM TO STEAM AS A CYCLE.

THE LED - THE MAIN GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO

MAKE THE LED GLOW FROM THE SPINNING OF THE

TURBINE.

THE SIZE OF THE PVC - WE HAVE TO FIND THE SMALL

SIZE OF TUBE AS SMALL AS POSSIBLE IN ORDER TO

MAKE THE STEAM FLOW FASTER.

THE SIZE OF THE CONTAINER - WE WANT THE SIZE OF

THE CONTAINER TO BE ABLE TO HOLD PLENTY OF

WATER AND HAVE A SPACE FOR STEAM TO FLOW.

THE AMOUNT OF HEAT - WE WANT A HIGH AMOUNT OF

HEAT WHICH MAKES THE WATER BOIL FASTER.

DURING THE TASK OF FINDING EQUIPMENT, WE HAD

CONTACTED MANY SHOPS OR TECHNICIANS TO SUPPORT

US ON GETTING SUITABLE MATERIAL THAT WE CAN USE.

WE HAD GONE THROUGH VARIOUS WEBSITES THAT GIVE

LOTS OF DETAILS ABOUT SHOPS THAT PROVIDE

PROFESSIONAL EQUIPMENT.
MATERIALS & COSTS

FOR THE COST OF THE MATERIAL, LUCKLY, WE HAVE

MANY OF THEM AT OUR HOME, SO WE DID NOT HAVE TO

BUY IT. FOR EXAMPLE, ONE OF OUR GROUP MATES HAS

A PVC TUBE AT HIS HOUSE DUE TO PARENT’S BUSINESS.

FURTHERMORE, THE ELECTRIC GADGETS LIKE MOTOR,

WIRES, RESISTOR, AND LED ARE PROVIDED IN THE

SCHOOL. THEREFORE, WE CAN BORROW THEM FROM

THE LABORATORY. IN ADDITION, WE MADE THE

TURBINE BY OURSELVES BY CUTTING THE ALUMINUM

CAN. AS A RESULT, WE CAN REDUCE A LOT OF COSTS.


PROCESS

THIS PROJECT LOOKS EASY TO MAKE AND IT CAN BE

FINISHED IN A SHORT TIME PERIOD. AS THE QUOTE SAID

“DON’T JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER,” THE PROCESS

AND THE POSSIBLE ERRORS ARE MUCH MORE DIFFICULT

FROM WHAT WE INITIALLY THOUGHT. FIRST, WE WERE

STUCK ON WHAT WE WERE GOING TO DO AND THINK

ABOUT THE DESIGN LIKE HOW IT IS GOING TO LOOK.

AFTER WE TALKED AND DISCUSSED AN IDEA,

GEOTHERMAL WAS SOMETHING RELATED TO CREATING

AND DESIGNING TOO. FOR THE DESIGN, WE CREATED

THE DESIGN IN THE SKETCH-UP APPLICATION THAT

ALLOWS US TO MAKE THE DESIGN IN ORDER TO HELP US

SEE THE BIGGER PICTURE. IN THE MODEL, THE PLACE

WHERE THE GEOTHERMAL PROCESS WAS LOCATED WAS

IN THE HOUSE. WE BUILT IT AS A BIG BUILDING IN A

TOWN. PEOPLE WANTED TO USE THE ENERGY FROM

THIS BUILDING BECAUSE THIS WILL HELP THEM SAVE

THE COST OF ELECTRICITY. SO, WE MADE IT IN A

REASONABLE SIZE. THIS IS BECAUSE IF IT IS TOO BIG, IT

WOULD RUN OUT OF SPACE AND IF IT IS TOO SMALL, IT

MAY NOT BE ENOUGH FOR THIS TOWN. AS A RESULT,

THIS MODEL WAS CREATED.


PROCESS

WE STARTED THE PROJECT BY RESEARCHING HOW TO DO A

GEOTHERMAL POWER GENERATOR MODEL AND HOW IT’S LINKED

TO PHYSICS SUBJECTS. WE HAD A WORK LOG FOR EACH DAY

THAT WE HAVE DONE THE MODEL BEFORE WE DO THE REAL

MODEL. WE HAD A PROTOTYPE THAT WAS A SMALL SCALE OF

THIS MODEL TO SEE HOW IT WORKS AND HOW LONG IT TAKES IN

A SMALL SCALE TO CALCULATE THE TIME AND COMPARE TO THE

ACTUAL MODEL. ALL OF THE PROCESSES CAN BE SEEN IN THE

WORK LOG, TOO.

AS A TOTAL TO FINISH UP THE PROJECT, THIS

WORKLOG IS THE NUMBER OF DAYS THAT WE HAD AN

WE MAINLY FOCUSED ON RESEARCHING AND FINDING

THE MODEL WAS NOT QUITE A SUCCESS. WE WERE

ABLE TO MAKE THE STEAM BLOW THE TURBINE WHICH

MADE IT MOVE AND PRODUCED ELECTRICITY.

HOWEVER, IT TOOK TIME TO HEAT UP THE SPRAY CAN

THAT WE USED TO CONTAIN WATER AND WE ALSO

FAILED TO MAKE THE CYCLE AND NEED TO REMOVE IT

OUT OF OUR MODEL. INSIDE THE CAN, THERE WERE

STILL SMALL SOLID PARTICLES OF THE CHEMICAL

STUCK AROUND THE SPRAY CAN. THIS MAKES US FEAR

THAT IT MIGHT EXPLODE OR CAUSE A FIRE, BUT IT DID

NOT. IT TOOK 11 MINUTES 24 SECONDS TO HEAT UP AND

THE STEAM TO COME OUT FROM THE PIPE. WE ALSO

REDUCED THE DIAMETER OF THE PIPE TO CAUSE THE

STEAM MORE PRESSURE SO IT CAN TURN THE TURBINE

WITH A GREATER SPEED. MOREOVER, THE LED WAS NOT

AS BRIGHT AS WE THOUGHT. THE LIGHT FROM THE LED

WAS STILL DIM AND IT BLINKED QUITE OFTEN. WE

THOUGHT THAT IT WOULD HAVE BEEN MORE STABLE

THAN THIS, BUT THE RESULT THAT WE GOT FROM THE

MODEL IS A BIT DISAPPOINTING. NEVERTHELESS, WE

STILL SUCCEEDED IN CREATING ELECTRICITY BY USING

STEAM FROM GEOTHERMAL ENERGY, EVEN THOUGH WE

CHANGED A PLAN FROM CLOSED CIRCUIT TO AN OPEN

CIRCUIT DURING THE PROJECT.


DISCUSSION

DIFFICULTIES

IT WAS QUITE DIFFICULT TO FIND THE RIGHT

EQUIPMENT THAT SUITS THIS PROJECT. FOR

EXAMPLE, FINDING THE TUBE WITH A PROPER SIZE

THAT CAN ACT AS THE PATH FOR STEAM TO FLOW

EFFECTIVELY WAS INCREDIBLY HARD.

WE STRUGGLED WITH MAKING HOLES ON THE SPRAY

CAN BECAUSE WE NEEDED TO CALCULATE THE

ACCURATE SIZE OF THE HOLE FIRST AND MAKE SURE

THAT THE PVC TUBE IS PERFECTLY FIT IN.

THE TYPES OF MOTOR WE HAD BEFORE COULD NOT

PRODUCE ENOUGH ELECTRICITY FOR THE LED TO

GLOW BUT THEN WE MANAGED TO GET A BIGGER AND

MORE EFFECTIVE MOTOR THAT CAN PRODUCE

ENOUGH ELECTRICITY FOR THE LED TO GLOW.


DISCUSSION

DIFFICULTIES

TIME MANAGEMENT WAS ONE OF THE PROBLEMS WE

HAD SINCE THERE ARE MANY TECHNICAL

DIFFICULTIES BEHIND THE PROJECT. SOME OF US

LIVE IN DORMS SO WE WOULD HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL

THEY WENT HOME TO GET THE STUFF WE NEED. OUR

MODEL IS HARD TO TRANSPORT FROM ONE PLACE TO

ANOTHER, SO WE COULD ONLY MAKE PROGRESS AT

SCHOOL WHICH WAS NOT SO MUCH TIME BECAUSE

THERE WERE OTHER SUBJECTS’ WORKS, PROJECTS

AND TESTS. THERE WERE ALSO BOYS’ ROTC, WEEK

WITHOUT WALLS AND MANY OTHER ACTIVITIES

BETWEEN THE PROJECT SO WE LOST TIME FROM

THOSE AS WELL.

THE CYCLE ITSELF IS HARD TO CREATE DUE TO HOW

SMALL THE SYSTEM IS.


ERRORS

WE HAVE TO CHANGE THE MOTORS MULTIPLE TIMES

DUE TO IT BEING UNABLE TO PRODUCE ENOUGH

ELECTRICITY

AFTER WE CHANGED THE MOTOR, THE MASS OF THE

NEW MOTOR WAS TOO HEAVY ( DUE TO THE

EXTENSION PART WHICH CAN’T BE REMOVED) WHICH

MAKES THE TURBINE UNABLE TO ROTATE.

WE THEN FIXED THE TURBINE BY CONNECTING THE

TURBINE ALMOST DIRECTLY TO THE MOTORS BUT IT

ALSO CAUSES A LOT OF CONSEQUENCES.

THE CONSEQUENCE IS THAT THE TURBINE IS TOO

CLOSE TO THE END OF THE TURBINE CONTAINER

WHICH MAKES THE WIND BOUNCE BACK ONTO THE

TURBINE CAUSING IT TO BECOME UNABLE TO SPIN.

WE THEN FINALLY FIX IT BY REMOVING THE CYCLE

BECAUSE IT IS THE ONLY WAY DUE TO THE SHORTAGE

OF TIME.
SUGGESTIONS

WE SHOULD PREPARE OUR OWN MATERIALS NEXT

TIME AND THE MATERIALS SHOULD BE READY BEFORE

WE START THE PROJECT.

THE HEAT SOURCE SHOULD BE CHANGED FROM

CANDLE TO SOMETHING ELSE (HEAT COIL?)


CONCLUSION

NOWADAYS, CLEAN ENERGY HAS BECOME MORE AND

MORE DEMANDING IN OUR WORLD. MANY COMPANIES

AND GOVERNMENTS ALSO TAKE PART WITH JOINT
